Yep but if he had asked who won the first "Great Race" the answer would have been different.

Prior to Bathurst it was a 501 mile race run at Phillip Island, the first race was in 1960 and was called the Armstrong 500 - it was won by a Vauxhall Cresta driven by Roxburgh and Coad. Race moved to Bathurst in 1963 and was called the Armstrong 500.

Correct. :bravo:
The first great race was to be held at Bathurst but I think due to track damage it was moved to Phillip Island where it was for three years. Then after that track got ripped up by the race it moved to Bathurst. Have to get my book out for the details but something like that. And no I was nowhere near alive back then, just read the whole history one day.

The First ever race on the circuit? Assume you mean car race?
Peter Whitehead.
April 18th 1938
Don't know about the vehicle except it was an AGP meet.
Someone else here may know?
Bikes first race 2 days prior.

I am pretty sure he means the "Great Race" ie 500 mile touring cars/tintops. But good info anyway.
PS - I think it was the AGP race that tore up the Bathurst circuit not allowing the "Great Race" there until 1963.
