View Full Version : Picked up my VE yesterday

I picked up an Omega yesterday, it's a work car.
I am quite impressed with it so far, seems to be a noticable step up from the VZ. I think it looks quite european both inside and outside. I had a large number of people at my work come and have a look at it ( iwas the first a t work to get one) and all those who had made the "it looks like a ford from the front" or "it looks like a 380 from the back" comments changed their tune, everyone liked it. I got it in the new colour evoke, which I quite like also, I had to pick it without having seen it on a car which was a bit of a worry.
On thing a mate (383ci) noticed that the indicator sound is quite obviously a sound effect. The other thing that I found interesting was that the fuel cap does not have an internal release, you simply push the fuel door from the outside and it clicks open. No security at all for your full tank of fuel which is ever increasingly worth more. I'm sure the old fuel door wasn't very secure but it would have deterred some.
It was funny driving it around yesterday arvo and seeing the odd guy do a double take as I drove buy. I'm used to that in my other car but not my work one.
I work in Hornsby and drive through the street where that video of the black SSV was shot daily, that SSV was from Suttons Holden in Waitara, I saw it in there on Monday this week.
Cheers

with the fuel release, i dare say it'll be like most european cars and actually locks when you lock the vehicle... if u look at the fuel cap itself it will have a circle where some form of locking mechanism goes into it...
my astra has this as well ... personally i prefer it to having to reach down and pull the fuel lever (ive generally got a pair of thongs there so its a pain in the arse, lazy i know) :moon:

Can I be a dumb ass and ask where the pics are? I can't find a link to them.
So you like the Evoke colour?
I have a black Calais V on order and was tossing up between Evoke and the black, but wasn't sure what the colour actually looked like as it is hard to gauge the colour properly by the little square and picture in the brochure.
I currently have a VZ Calais in Turbine Mica which looks a nice shade of gray at night, but it is a quite light colour during the day and many people have commented on it being a variety of colours during the day, the most common being green.
That is why I decided on the black as black is black is black, with very little room for interpretation.

I asked a mod to delete them cause they weren't showing as thumbs, hense the froggy jokes, I'll post up just the links.
And Yeah I like the evoke, black will be great too though especially on the Calais V......mmmmmm.

Some bigger rims, lowered and some dints it will look sweet. Though they really do look European, but I would love an SSV  .

The rubber is 225/60/16 so they would have to be 16x7s
Did any get their VE delivery before Friday ?
Oh and btw, whilst my links appear broken, showing the yellow froggy, they do infact link to the pics.

So where is the review, particularly handling, A4 (improved or just the same?).
The car actually looks very good, not like a base model at all.

Maybe off topic here though when do the Police start getting there SSV's? Or will they just get the normal ss commodores and when :errr: Highway patrol officers must love it, drive a new model V8 Commodore and thrash it.

What a Brilliant car!!! We got the first of ours on Friday arvo. Driving down the main street gets a few looks, although i was surprised it didn't get more. We parked it next to a VZ and one noticeable thing was that it didn't look too different (not as big a change as VS to VT, in the front anyway). The new suspension is a big step up, very nice!
The engine note is also different, the first thing i thought was V6 380 or Camry. Interior is nice, although it seems very cheap. The old man has taken it to Sydney for the weekend, so when he gets back we will be able to see fuel consumption figures. All up i would say its a massive improvement, and I cant wait to drive the higher specs. The gearbox is also a big improvement. You would not recognise that is the same 4spd as the VZ. Nice and smooth, although i will need a bigger drive to see what it is like at speed and changing back etc.
P.S, We have had the new Camry's now for a week, and the are a huge improvement. If you get the chance, have a drive!

That looks really nice in Evoke.
Really reminds me of the Turbine Mica that I currently have, but seems to be a little darker and doesn't suffer from the problem the Turbine does where it looks different colours and shades, like greenish, in the sun light.
Very nice car! Can't wait for my Calais V to be delivered! Hurry up lousy government!

oh no!!!!
That's my ULTIMATE HATE about the wife's BA/BF foulcan
if your seat belt warning goes off whilst blinker is on, sounds like blinker stops, due to it only handling one 'sound effect' att a time. And i know from the euro berlina, astra and vectra, its a bit of a poxy sound.
i like the old click click rather than a computerized version.
ahwell, that's progress.
i'm planning on hanging on to my car for a while anyway, so it wont affect me.
safe driving !

VHSLE, or anyone who has an Omega, what does it drive like compared to a BA falcon or VZ? Does it need to be reved hard to get going? Is there much cabin noise? Whats the drive quality like? What is the sound system like? Oh and what is the initial fuel consumption (computer reading (average and instant) and km's to amount of fuel put in)
A brief review would be nice :burnout:

Funny thing, I dont see anywhere instantaneous fuel readout on any of the models, including Calais VE.
Anyone know if they have seenan instantaneous trip L/100 km

I took a Calais for a test drive on Friday and it had instantaneous fuel usage on the trip computer.

The old boy just got back from sydney, mostly highway driving, averaged 10.0 L/hundred, at an average speed of 106kph. That was from wagga to camden and return. In a VZ we would get 9L/hundred. That figure should come down a bit when it is run in though.

Should improve at least 10% - not only due to tightness of all the mechanicals, bearings, seals on shafts etc but also the ECU will still be 'learning'. 8-9 should be achievable.

But wouldn't your manual have a better overdrive (6th gear) compared to teh A4, which would help alot too?? That's why V8's are good cruiser's?

they are looking at putting a six speed in all models. i think, or they might have the 5 speed in the low end 6's and the 6 speed in the high end 1's. but i definately know they are looking at a 6 speed.
