Hi my auto trans outta my VX SS needs replacing and i was wondering whether to get the 4L60 e or the 4L65 e (Apparently also called the 300KW GTS A4 box) There is about $600 difference between the two.
I am planning on upgrading diff gears to 3.73, stall converter and edit...

Go manual, that's what I would do if I was you.

I suppose you've got to find out how much it would cost to build up a 4L60 to be stronger than a 4L65. If it is less than $600 dollars then maybe do that. Personally, I'd probably just put in a crate 4L65 and see what happens mostly due to the convenience. 515Nm rating vs 488Nm

From the above site:
The L65 differs from the 4L60-E in these ways:
* Five-pinion gears for input and reaction gearsets (versus four-pinion gears in the L60)
* Heat-treated stator shaft splines
* Induction hardened turbine shaft
* Heavier-duty low/reverse roller clutch
* Additional friction plate added to 3-4 clutch (seven plates versus six in L60)
* Shot-peened output shaft
* Revised valve body calibration.

if you can afford the $600 extra get the 4l65e it is a stronger box but for your mods i think the 4l60e should be fine.
my stock 4l60e box was 140k old and it lasted 6 months with my mods,just don't abuse it and it will last.
