Good Morning All,

Just wondering if anyone can help out with some advice on wax products. I have a VYII Cosmo (Dark Purple) ute and have tried several different products and ways of polishing the car but can't seem to get that "wet look" shine that everyone talks about. The paint is in very good nick, no stone chips etc. I've tried buying the best meguiars and zymol products but they don't seem to do the trick. I even recently put the car in to a specialist car polishing shop and $495 later it didn't look much different to when I took it in. Can anyone suggest the best product/process/place to bring the car up nice 'n' shiny???

Thanks in advance!

I tend to use a good quality wax - doing a few panels at a time then polish off.

Once done - I use Polymer Sealant - applying in the same way - a few panels at a time.

I find that Polymer Sealant helps to seal in the gloss from the wax and acts a protecting coat. Water just beads on it an runs off. Seems to last about 6 months and then - if I feel up to it or if needed I go again.

I have used the turtle wax Platinum Series Ultra Gloss wax. I also use the Platinum Series Ultra Gloss Detailer. I could never get a really nice shine to my Statesman, Heron white, it always looked drab. Once I used this stuff it gave it a brilliant shine. Now I have a Quicksilver coloured Caprice and it looked really awesome after i used this, just like a mirror, but probably helps that it's metallic. I think over the years i have used just about every type of wax/polish on the market. Until recently I always used the Meguirs stuff, but personally, I like the turtle wax better now.

On the subject of waxing and keeping cars clean....

I am thinking of getting some paint protection on our clubby. The main reason for this is it is only a weekend car and both my wife and I work in the city. So this limits us to cleaning the car on the weekend whenn we will want to be driving it.... So is paint protection worth it?

Sweet, thanks so much for the info! You're right, it is extremely hard to make a white car shine so if it did that I'll give it a try. Think I might go get some tomorrow and try it out on the weekend.

Thanks Again.

SSV8Pilot - What kind/brand of polymer sealant do you use? Wouldn't mind trying that too after I've waxed a couple of panels.

Though you kmight ask...I'm in the office and can't quite remember. It is a quality brand though like Turtle Wax or something- have a shop around to see whats good value for money.

I also use Meguires car wash - good stuff.

Remember to keep the car out of the sun when applying. By doing a few panels at a time I find you are more diligent and effectively breaking the job down so its not such a big task.

PS- My car is Redhot - and the red comes up really well - silicon spray the tyres with the right type of spray and applicator and looks good as new.

Yeah I agree, I already use meguirs car wash and it is good stuff! I currently use turle wax sheer magic on the tyres, it makes them look very shiny and lasts longer than anything else I've tried (as long as you apply it then give it some time to dry, don't apply it then drive straight away otherwise it ends up all down the side of the car)

Your question was answered in the thread specifically about paint protection.

The Turtle wax comes in paste and liquid form. Up to you which one you prefer, I have always used the paste. I use the quick detailer once a week on it, and it keeps the just polished look up for months.

The only thing I hate about cleaning cars is the mags! The rest I enjoy. I've tried every mag wheel cleaner on the market, and I think the results are just average. Got to get in there with the sponge and give it a good scrub to get a nice shine out of it.

G'day FlyingLady,
You obviousley don't mind spending money to have a nice finish. I have a black car and use swissol products and waxes. Firstly I used the Onyx wax and thought it was awsome until more recently went to the Concourso wax (about $300/200gm) which is well worth it as you would get about 8 applications from it. These products will give you an exceptional finish.
good luck Jerry

Hi There,

Use either Zaino or Poorboys products, if money is no issue go the Swissol.

Yep, I use Zaino products and they're great plus not all that expensive. For about $250 I got everything I needed for inside and out including for leather. There is a local distributor in Melbourne now and they send stuff out fast - typically have my stuff within 2 days of ordering online at http://zainobros.com.au/category1_1.htm

See http://covo.smugmug.com/gallery/1324554 for pics of mine after being done with Z2 Pro/Z6/ZFX. I have since also got some Z8 and it gives an even wetter looking shine. The products also all go a looooong way.

If you don't want to do it yourself Damian from Final Inspection can do it for you (he is on here - user name Detailer).

I've always used Meguires Yellow Wax. Every 3-6 months.

Paint needs to be polished before its applied for the first time though.

Works a treat for me.

Poorboys works for me on the Phantom SV6 - seems to last quite well too. I've been buying it here (http://www.waxit.com.au). Price is good and it usually arrives the next day if ordered early.
I get the 'Pro Polish with Carnauba Blue' and 'Nattys Paste Wax Blue'. It's really easy to apply and remove. Between polishes I use the Spray & Gloss to keep it looking good.

Also get yourself a bunch of microfibre cloths and applicators.

Im a detailer and you cant beat a high end carnauba wax for that wet look.

Surface preperation plays a big part in that reflection, swirl removal, glaze, sealand and a final wax is what i use on my car. I use swissol wax on my wagon its awesome as the last coat.

Surely that professional $495 detail would have had the car looking close to the best it can be? They would have done the swirl removal and used a good wax.

One of the best budget wax's is poorboys natty wax blue, under $30 and its better than everything at autobarn and better than most of the professional stuff.

Swissol onyx wax is probably the best bang for your buck wax $100 and you get 10 coats out of the tub. So a good 2-3 years worth. After swissol onyx the wax's increase in price dramatically and only gain a small percentage increase in shine. Zymol titanium is also a very good wax, but again its price is getting right up there most people would think your crazy for spending that much on a wax :p

For your average enthusiast Poorboys Natty blue is the perfect wax, for the less sane people swissol onyx is good, i use swissol onyx and i would never spend anymore than this. Most people wont notice an improvement with anything above swissol onyx, you'd be better off spending any extra money on surface preperation. Spending $30 on a decent polish before applying swissol onyx would have the paint looking better than a $500 wax without the polish step.

Klasse All in one is an excellent product to use before a wax as it cleans, polishes and seals the surface so its ready to wax. You could even use multiple steps, a light swirl remover, glaze and then sealant. Then apply the wax for even better results. After swirl remover, glaze and sealant my car is shinier than nearly every car on the regular car cruises. Thats without the final wax topper, but then again my paint is rather dark so its easier to make it reflection.
