Can't get the particular brand of silicone tyre shine I used to use anymore:bawl:
Anybody car to share what they use these days?
I have been using the VIP car care aerosol cans for a few years, mainly because it is easy and gives a good shine, and I use it on mudflaps, window surround rubbers and those damn black strips over the turret!!
Seem to remember someone recommending the 'foaming' stuff at one stage but can't remember who or where I saw it.
Used to use armour-all but too old and lazy to do that these days!
Probably looking at something around the $10-$15 per can as I seem to go through a hell of a lot of it.
Cheers,

Meguiars gel. Tried various silicone based sprays over the years and Meguiars gel leaves them for dead. It lasts for ages, weeks instead of days, and doesn't splatter all over your wheel arches so much.

Meguiars Gel...
100%
Nothing comes close.
1 bottle will last for ages too... might seem steep, from memory its about $25 .. but should last aaaages. Wash your car once a week and it wouldnt suprise me if it would last half a year..

Thanks to all for the quick replies!
Meguairs Spray On Tyre Shine. Is that stuff silicone based?
Doesn't matter too much, just curious.
And for the Gel, those that use it, have you used it on black trim on your car successfully?

Yes, I use the Gel on my side mirrors, rear bumper of the VY, and other black plastic. Works fine. Since you wipe it on you don't get the overspray you would with a spray can

Never thought of it like that, I spray the silicone stuff on a rag and wipe it on.
Wasteful now I come to think of it.........

i'm not convinced about the purple meguiars gel. it smells nice and all, but i just dont' think it lasts as long as i'd like it too. Would taller profile tyres be part of the problem?

i have gone back to using tyre black -under $4 a tin lasts for 6 months.Looks a lot better to my eyes than any of the fancy stuff . The problem i had with meguires ,mothers etc is it just didnt last -looked good for a few days thats it . to get the clean black effect you will need to reapply it weekly or the tyres went a washed out faded colour. And it aint cheap.

I am old school when I come to tyre dressing. I still use Tyre Black. I don't like the dressings as they seem greasy to me, sling, attract & hold dirt and end up ruining the sprong I use on the wheels.
I use Polyglaze Tyre Black which is a water based paint. It dries and leaves a nice shine which lasts for months. Only thing to watch out is if you have used a dressing you need to get that off your tyres completely or it will repell water and this water based paint and that is problem (it will not dry):

Eagle 1 tyre shine imo.. used it on all black plastic parts outside of the car and tyres of course.. last for ages! just cut up a cheap yellow sponge into a little block for the applicator! easy!

I also use something similar to Tyre Black.
Not 100% what it is called but comes in a tin & you paint it onto your wheels. Clear in colour but gives a great shine.
Eagle 1 tyre shine is also really good esp if you want a quick spray on shine.

The problem with tire black is that it will rub off on your clothing if you bump up next to it.
I am using Mequires now and it looks good but it will splatter on the car if you don't let it dry for a while. I always scrub the tires with steel wool to clean them and get them extra shiny!

I use Polyglaze Tyre Black which is a water based paint. It dries and leaves a nice shine which lasts for months.
I used that stuff on my commodore, the god awful sh!t blistered and then started to peel off. Being paint it wouldn't come off easy either. A few hours of scrubing with a tyre brush and some of the Meguiar's non acid wheel cleaner and the remains were still holding on tight.
I can whole heartedly recommend the Meguiar's Tyre gel though. I use it on my Monaro and it works a treat. The purple one's a bit too shiny for my liking though. I'll give the other less shiney one a go next.

i use the cheap Export brans, $3.99 a can. Doesnt flick off, can spray as much as you want and actually ends up shiny. I find most brands claim to be shiny but give just a dull black appearance. This stuff works but doesnt last long - good for a weekend or so though and i find it superior to meguires tyre shine (dunno bout the purple stuff, never tried it)

I was impressed with Meguires Hot tyre whatever its called, expensive spray on but looked excellent. Only problem is I dont have mudflaps (their on the to do list tho) so it'd all fly up onto the paintwork an the shine only lasted a few days.
I then found Armourall gel which I tried and works a charm. Even 3 or 4 washes later its still shiny.
I'm assuming the meguires gel is pretty much the same, we sell Meguires thru our distribution center so if I know a part number I can order it up, but our lists are a tad old. Once the armour all stuffs low I'll look at the meguires gel.
But the pink Meguires Hot rims cleaner squirt on stuff works a charm on the alloys. After a few applications you'll see the wheels literally sparkle in the sun. Mix that with shiny rims ... :bravo:

Well thanks for all the replies fellows, didn't realise how many different ideas and products were out there and some still using the good old tyre black!
FWIW I think I will try a gel product first, just to see how it goes.
If I don't have any success there I will try some of the aerosol ones again.

The problem with tire black is that it will rub off on your clothing if you bump up next to it.
The Polyglaze dries totally like a gloss paint. While about 15 minutes, depending on the temperature, you can touch it and no colour will come off.
I used that stuff on my commodore, the god awful sh!t blistered and then started to peel off. Being paint it wouldn't come off easy either. A few hours of scrubing with a tyre brush and some of the Meguiar's non acid wheel cleaner and the remains were still holding on tight.
If the tyres have any remnants of previous Tyre Dress or are brand new they do repell water and will repell this stuff. It is very important to make sure the tyre surface is completely clear of any "product. I have even used degreaser to prepare the surface for the 1st application and from then on you have not problems.
The other very important advice is, light coat (just like my old man used to say :yup: ). If you lay down a heavy coat it will crack and flake off and create a mess because the stuff does stick really well and smoothing the areas where it has cracked in difficult.

Really depends what you want some like the glossy look some like the natural matt rubber look, i find the armourall shit is in-between so i use that and it`s only bout 6bucks that fancy shit is overpriced, rather save the money towards a good wax or soap, or a few cans or something:)
I have used a variety of brands and my 2 cents worth is to agree with those who support the "cleaning" of the tyres regularly before applying the shine.
I also offer a suggestion that the "tyre shine" process should be a separate one to washing the car to obtain the maximum effect and to allow drying time - do it when you park the car after the day's driving and allow the shine to set overnight - this greatly reduces the splatter effect.

Mequires tire gel for me, had the bottle for about 3yrs now, and have a about 1/4 left, but I only put on 1 coat. does last ages, the canned crap has a glosser shine to it (but that could be my only one coat of gel on the tire) but the gel kicks the canned crap for shine lasting ages. I use it on plastic trim too.

Sorry about the old thread, just doing some research on tyre products
Information
All tyres contain anti ozonant which works its way to the surface of the tyre
When it hits that, it causes "blooming" aka tyre browning
Tyre dressings (whether spray or gel) will contain one of these
Water based (polydimethylsiloxane) silicone or solvent based (Dimethal silicone)
The solvent one is a greasy clear liquid, the water based is mily white
Unfortunately many bulk industrial brand tyre shines are solvent based and the solvent silicone causes dry rot and leaching of the UV blockers in the tyres
The trouble I find with meguiars tyre shines (all of them) is this
Leaves a build up of sticky residue over time
Attracts dust something shocking
Doesn't last any longer than one to two weeks
Gives a sticky finish and can look artificial
Proper cleaning of tyres is very important as it will give the tyre shine something to bond to and thus longer durability
I use Carlack 68 plastic care (non silicone cleaner-polish-protectant) with a rag or foam sponge after shampooing the tyres
This gives a satin finish and maximises durability of the gel
The Gel I use is Sonus Tire & Trim Gel - no VOC's and a little bit of safe water based silicone
The best part - it dries in five to ten minutes leaving a rich dark finish that looks a little wet but not shilacky and will never sling all over your paintwork
I'm about to try Ultima Tire & Trim guard plus which is a polymer base with a fraction of safe silicone (the opposite of others which are silicone(shine) and a hint of polymer for bonding)
Should get three or more months of protection with the Carlack, Ultima x 2 and 1 x Sonus
http://www.ultimafinishcare.com/ult-7004-120.html
http://sonus-usa.com/son-730-8.html
As for your commodore and monaro exterior trims, before they dry up and leave that cracking look, it is best to use Glare micro finish, spider and professional polish by machine or hand (foam pad) and make them like the paint
