I have a friend who has a 1997 HSV Senator ( VT 220kw ). He has had a friend ( mechanic ) look at the engine and not know what it is is. It is not an LS1 ( Gen III ), but it is a 5.7 litre.

Could it be the C34? He is looking at getting an edit but is wary until he knows what engine it is.

Any ideas?

The 220kw engines were 5.7 litre Holden engines based on the original 5.0 litre design.

Yep, as mentioned HSV stroker, there's a few guys on here with quite in depth knowledge of these engines, and should be able to answer any more specific questions that you (or he) might have.

Have a look in the Your Ride section about an article titled I think "Media VS GTS 215i" it has a bit of info about that motor.

Series 1's have the older iron block stroker engine which require kalmaker or similar to remap the chip. Unless you have done a cam or similar its not worth it. They cant be edited like the LS1's.

HSV 5.7-litre 'Stroker' V8

Power: 215 kW @ 4800 rpm(VR-VS), 220 kW(VT)
Torque: 475 N•m @ 3600 rpmThis motor started it's debut in the VR series of HSV sedans. It was an enhanced version of the 5.0 litre and was originally available on the VR/VS Senator and GTS/GTS-R. The GTS/GTS-R had the $8000 option of blueprinting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_balance#Blueprinting) the engine to produce more power. It was also available on the long wheel base models and was known as the Grange. Its last appearance was in the VT GTS(Series 1).

Not sure what sort of mechanic he is, but you'd be hard pressed to find any competant mechanic who doesnt know what a Holden V8 looks like. My comment might seem a bit harsh, but if the guy doenst know what it is I wouldnt let him within a country mile of it.

This might be harsh but a whole lop of people involved in this post need a good slappin' (not a turkey slappin though :burnout: )

I was thinking the same thing when I read the first post. I was hoping someone would say this before I had the chance......

The Mechanic may wear a blue oval cap and blinkers, so maybe he didn't know or want to know.

Understandable .:lmao:

Maybe his see and eye dog didnt jump up high enough to get a good look,

Seriously ,there is a few visual differences between the old Holden motor and the LS1 and if your mechanic cant tell them apart take everyone elses advice and find one that can ASAP
