just take it off and if it looks like ass put it back on
relatively simple to take off and remain legal now the spoiler doesn't have brake lights

I've always thought that no spoiler adds a little class to the sporty/aggressive look. (Think M5)
Just my 2c though.

I vote to take it off and take a photo in same spot again with it off.
Just putting my thumb over that photo the overall shape looks better with it off.
How is it fixed to the boot. I take it, it would leave some holes.
EddieVE06
07-09-2006, 02:38 PM
I'd take it off. But how do you then fix the holes in the boot. I asked whether it could be ordered without one and the answer i got was no.
Also I always found the spoiler handy in helping me park , without a spoiler it might make judging a little harder but i'm not sire if your car has reverse sensors.

It's a relatively simple job to weld up the holes and then repaint the boot lid.
Best to make sure it's done properly though because if the holes are just plugged with bog/filler, it can shrink over time and become very noticable.

So why cant they be ordered without one? It can't be that bloody hard can it. The dealer i went to said they can't do it coz then where do you stop with client requests as to what they want and dont want.

I agree that this looks shit hot ... the problem is you will never get the car that low with the ESP and I reckon if it isn't that low it will just look like an Omega.
Then ... even if you could get it that low, you wouldn't be able to drive it anywhere !!!

Make sure you smear a bit of clear silicon or something on the underside of the top of the plug - can't have a VE with a leaky boot :)
as for painting dark colours - I had the front bar and right guard of my impulse blue SV8 repainted and a good spraypainter can do a perfect match :)

I agree with NickS. Its a brand item. It will just look like a new SS with the wing taken off. Leave its modification for the second or third owner who are looking to get differentiation in 5 years time. Not now.

I've thought about taking the spoiler off my VX SS, but decided to leave it since it's a factory item. If I was building up a project car from a base model I definitely wouldn't put a spoiler on (I like the Q car approach), but coming from the factory that way is a bit different IMO. So personally I'd leave it on.

Does anybody know for sure how effective these spoilers are?
Do they affect lift only, or also reduce turbulence / drag at the rear of the vehicle?
I will say it's not the prettiest looking spoiler going. I've always refered to them as a handle to push the car home, especially the humungous ricer ones!
Drewie
07-09-2006, 05:12 PM
I'd leave it on, for all the work involved in deleting it, ie repainting the boot I don't think it really looks much better, if anything maybe looks a bit plain with it off. And come resale time if I was buying a second hand one I would want it as it came from the factory.

07-09-2006, 05:14 PM
Leave it on! I'm not a big spoiler fan, I hate aftermarket spoilers (even the smaller ones), but the SS looks better with it... IMO anyway.
At the end of the day do what makes you happy... Who really cares what other people might think the car is, or how it looks.. You'll know what it is, and it will be a tough sounding, hard launching V6 if they think its an Omega

Get a rediculous oversized novelty wing and run with that for a month, then you can put the stock wing back on and feel much better about yourself :).
Or just leave it on... it's part of the sports look after all, and a key recognition feature. What was wrong with the 90s anyway? ;)
I vote to leave it on. It looks good with it on, it looks good with it off and because it's already fitted why not leave it there.
As others have said, without it it just looks like a hotted up Omega (IMO).
Nice car
BEWARE
07-09-2006, 06:28 PM
I'd lower it(lots) first(at least in the rear anyway), then take it off and see, it'll look silly with no wing at the stock height, but will look good wingless and dumped IMO.
Take the V8 6.0L badges off too, they look goofy and too small for the lower gaurds, and not centred, they should have redesigned those badges to suit the larger area, they look good on the VZ's but are not right for the VEs

I'd prefer that to any other method of removal.
Or swap with an omega owner who wants the wing, they are a $600+ option, so you could swap and get some cash (for gas). However you could also remove it and put it away, then at sale time you have SS again.
Personally I would keep it, its one of the defining SS icons, without it its a VE.

I thinks that there is a lot of truth in that. Personally I am not a fan of the wing. But if you take the wing off it looks perched and needs lowering. I would lower it to the HSV height of 102mm. Still a legal height and looks a lot better.

Yeah the companies do probably think they look crap and as someone else said here "no wings" are fashionable at the moment so in the future "wings" will probably be in again.
All the prestige brands seem to be going for diffusers which is probably just a trend thing as well
I think the SS has other details to make it different to the Omega though
eg skirts, front bar, rims, ride height, front/rear lights, interior etc
I'm sure if you bought a 35K Omega and put a SS wing on the back you wouldn't be mistaken for a 60k SSV !

Why does that just look like a car that's had some punk kid rip the spoiler off for a lark? Seriously SS and SS-V without spoilers look stoopid to me. We all know the body kit does nothing aerodynamically, so why not take the skirting and air dam off too? Or just buy a Calais.

Why does that just look like a car that's had some punk kid rip the spoiler off for a lark?
because it's a fake picture made in photoshop.

If you do decide to take the spoiler off, you could sell/trade the entire bootlid and spoiler with someone who just bought a new Omega/Berlina/Calais in the same colour, and avoid the hassle of painting etc.

Even worse, it was a picture I found on carsales, which if you look at it is distorted front to rear. Then I simply painted over the spolier in MS Paint. It was only to give a quick and dirty idea of what it may look like, not to create a photo realistic rendering.

Thanks for that BadMac, it just made my mind up to leave the spoiler on !!!!

I saw an ad in todays (Sydney) Daily Telegraph for new Holdens.
There is now a Omega V series available for $35K!!!!!!
Basic Omega - with bigger 17" alloy wheels, rear spoiler, air con, colour coding and wait for it... a V series badge on the boot!
Well there goes the neighbourhood.
Dont worry about your SS looking like an Omega when you drop the rear spoiler, as you will soon be seeing "taxis" that look like SS's...
Ouch.

As far as I can remember the Omega V Series is only a limited run thing for the start of the new model kinda thing. Sorta like starting with a lumina model.

Google rhetorical.
Very nicely structured rhetorical question.

The VE is good enough looking not to need a rear spoiler. Look at Audis and Bimmers, they look superb without rear spoilers.
COOKIE!

Take it OFF OFF OFF OFF i did on my VY and dumped it and it looks heaps better more aggressive and just looks the goods IMO.
As said above what bm's or audi's or merc's have them....

Looks better without, BUT it also looks more like any other normal Commodore without, cars which will be everywhere in a few months/years.

yep, keep it on,when i first saw the VE i thought they'd look tough without the spoiler but,i like others have said before in this post reckon it looks too plain without it.
lowering it would make it look fantastic, probably a tad more $$ though.
Still great looking car regardless,congratulations.

See if you can buy a boot from holden already painted in your colour. Then if you ever want to go back you can fit the old one on. I would say it would be a much more expensive exercise though....

another option would be the "unique hood scoop & rear spoiler" that walkinshaw performance are advertising as coming soon... i'm intrigued to see what it looks like

Nah when I first saw dad's SSV there was another one there with no spoiler and it just didnt look the same, the spoiler gives it that finishing touch!

I vote NO WING
Warning: NickS, the following might be hazardous to your health.
When I get my GTS, wing removal will be my first mod that's if I can't order it wingless.
:hide:
What he said x2 the VE is dead sexy minus spoiler ok it looks like an omega but hey a dumped omega running 20's don't look too bad to me.

Keep the spoiler ... I really like it.
Tough choice though and I can understand personalising your car.
ps .. saying that I must admit I was horrified at the no spoiler on the GTS talk

It sort of looks ok to me but I think if you could get a senator spoiler lip that would be the way to go.

Every time I see an SS or HSV without the rear wing I think to myself "looks like this guy just picked his car up from the panel beaters and they haven't finished working on it!"
