Not havin much luck there old mate,
Im sorry but the sort of bikes I could advise you on were probably built before your dad was born.:(

Oh except for a 888 I have my eye on.

At the price you're looking at and the fact that you will be doing city riding, I would suggest a trail bike with good road tires. There cheap to run, light and easy to handle in traffic, you can park them anywhere and you can do most of the maintenance yourself. Probably spend about 5 bucks a week on fuel too!
In the early 90's models you could look at an Yamaha XT 250 or DT 200, Honda XR 250, Kawasaki KDX or KLX 250 or Suzuki DR 250.
If you can it would be good if you could stretch the budget a little further and get something a little more current as any $1500 bikes will more than likely need some maintenance which is going to cost money anyway.
Good luck!
