contemplating heading up to the Mountain on Sunday, and noted the following route from Canberra:
Canberra, Gundaroo, Gunning, Crookwell, Trunkey, Georges Plain, Perthville and then Bathurst
This is a distance of 274km one way. Does anyone know what sort of roads are on this route?

Unless the roads have changed in recent years, the road from Crookwell to Trunkey was mostly dirt and full of corregations --> read NASTY !
No way in hell I'd be taking any car that I liked on that road. It has been a few years since I travelled that road but it is one of those roads that no council wants to take responsibilty for and therefore never had any work done on it.

I thought the rout out via Yass, Cowra, Orange Bathurst was not to bad. Perhaps a little bit longer. Orange Bathurst was a bit ordinary but all sealed. Going the other way in your original message is good out to Gunning - not much traffic and some real good driving sections - but after that not sure. Good luck!!!

The way I went a couple of Sunday's back and the route I plan on doing this weekend is Bowning, Cowra, Blayney. Around 3 hours and is a nice drive...
I checked on whereis and its 294km and 3hrs 29min (whereis always has slower travel times)
I'll be leaving 3.30am saturday for the drive up (have to catch up with Nicks to get the tickets)

that looks like a good route....I remember I did the day trip to Bathurst in 98 and left canberra at 4am, and got back the same day at midnight

my initial plan is up and back each day, although I may just crash at Cowra (I mean a motel that is)

Yeah definately head through yass cowra blayney, easiest way and by far the best roads also considerably shorter than going from cowra to orange to bathurst. Be careful though as motels are usually booked out in cowra for race weekend too

ok so the route is sorted.
I looked at a couple of track maps, and found them not very useful in terms of working out where to sit. does anyone have a link to a decent map?

three choices for places to sit, IMHO
1. End of conrod, so you can watch the cars goes through the chase
2. End of the main straight, so you can watch them head up the mountain
3. Up the top of the hill, at Mcphillany, but not if you have any females with you, or are adverse to beer swilling louts ...
Andrew.
btw: this track map is pretty useful http://www.supercheapauto1000.com/event/trackmap2.htm

thanks, when I went in 98 I sat at the end of the main straight, so I might try end of conrod this time.

I haven't been since 97 :( but I just noticed that it looks like they've put some sort of coporate box right where we used to sit. its marked S23 on the map, great location because you see them coming down the straight and braking for the chase.
hopfuelly there is still room there for us poor 'normal' spectators ...
I noticed they have a big screen on the other side of the track now, which has got to be a good thing ;)

I think anywhere you can get a view, as place should be packed.
Has anyone got any advice on parking I think arriving on race day probably won't score a park any closer than 2 k's from track.
cheers
I'm doing the same, going to leave sydney around 6.30. No idea how parking is going to work, just hope its all well signposted!
