MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY OF MARK PORTER
8/10/2006
With untold sadness the family of Mark Porter advises that Mark has passed away.
The family wishes to convey their heartfelt appreciation for the efforts of the medical crews who have been involved all the way through – at the track, at the Bathurst Base Hospital and at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and all of those who transported Mark between those facilities. They gave Mark every chance at life, for which we thank them.
The family also expresses their appreciation of the efforts of the officials of V8 Supercars Australia, all of whom have done their utmost to support all those involved in this tragedy.
The family conveys their best wishes to David Clark and those close to him and wishes him a complete recovery.
The Porter family also passes on their sincerest thanks to all of those who have conveyed to us their best wishes and prayers since Friday afternoon.
The family asks that the media respect the privacy of our family at this very emotionally stressful time.

How aweful. On Saturday as we left the track at about 6:30pm we saw the Hydralink truck on the side of the GWH just out of Bathurst and it gave me a chill, its a sight I'll never forget seeing the truck packed up and heading home.
Mum said to me today you watch, he'll survive until he knows the results of the SCA 1000, the same way people stay here until they know their loved ones are by their side
RIP mate, your now with Brocky - you 2 can set lap records at the track in the sky

Yeah, not good.
Tragic thing to happen, especially on the weekend that was supposed to be a celebration of Peter Brocks life. I guess racing is a dangerous sport, and there is always the risk of an accident.
Condolences to the Porter family.

good idea mods, sorry guys didnt realise i'd been beaten to the scoop!
as I said the more I think about seeing his truck on the side of the road with another car the more freaky it feels, I sort of knew his future as I passed it. I knew his mangled car was inside it. Sorry to repeat it but its one of those things you never forget. Plus I wasnt at the mount on Friday and saw it all unfold in real time at home on the projector I had hired.
Then to make it worse Carusoe, who was Porters replacement in the BOC car in the 1000 crashed out as well.
Once again we're reminded that its a dangerous sport.
I said it when Brock passed though, when I go I could only hope its in a similar circumstance - in a Holden at the Mountain.

Poor guy, didnt stand a chance...
From what I've heard... apparently he undid his harnesses after the first car hit him in an attempt to get out of the car before another one hit.... but alas he got hit again by Clarke's car before he could get out... (no harnesses to hold him in place during the bigger impact).
Also, they kept him on life support until after the race as they knew it would put a damper on the race if he passed during it....
:bawl: RIP MARK PORTER!!!
Another tragic loss.....
Having shared my thoughts so far...
I also think it was inevitable there would be more carnage this year with everyone trying to get their name on the Brock trophy and who knows if emotions cluttered some minds along the day as well???

I can't believe it.
I was standing next to this bloke as we were waiting for the podium presentation at Mallala two weeks ago and we exchanged g'days. Then for this to happen makes it hard to swallow.
He finished second and looked good all weekend. The CH10 presenter Mark ??? said it was about time he stepped up to the main game during the presentation as he was proving himself time & time again.
Very very sad.

I was there on the fence at Reid Park when the accident happened. I knew Mark Porter was in trouble as soon as the accident happened. The hit was enormous. And when they removed the car after a long time and we got to see the impact was right on the drivers door i had a sick feeling in my stomach.
Very sad to hear of his passing. RIP Mark Porter.

Condolences to his family ... very sad loss. I was hoping each time the news updated that they would say he had come off life support and was in a stable condition. It's so very sad to hear he didn't make it. :(
That accident and the Rat's accident on what was already a sombre weekend after Brocky put a real lump in my throat and have made everyone realise that these guys do a very dangerous job and aren't as "invincible" they (and we) thought. :(

and I just realised he'll always be etched in Bathurst history for the big 2005 crash as well. When you watch the replay of the Ambrose V Murph crash the first thing you hear is Leigh Diffey saying "Murphy made quick work of Mark Porter there" as the cars come up mountain straight.

Very Sad....something i wish i hadn't seen, had just got to the top of the mountain and was watching from right opposite the accident, the hit was huge, it looks big on TV but when your 10 metres away or so it was enourmous. I new from the way the medics were working he was in big trouble.. and when they started CPR, i just felt sick.
RIP Porter!!!

RIP Mark and sincere condolences to his Mum and Dad, wife and other family, and all in Motorsport that knew him. He was one of the rising stars.
I know that Mark's tragic accident is the topic for all of the general public who are less informed about the car rules than true fans, but I was wondering what side bar protection the Development cars have. Is it different to the Supercars or are the Development cars merely older Supercars?
Out such tragedies, there usually comes some good for the betterment of driver safety in general.
It's easy to say, hey it's one of those things, and I have heard others say that it wasn't avoidable, don't get me wrong, I also respect the efforts of all that tried to avoid it, but we all know that when a car clouts the wall on the mountain, it's a lottery where it will end up, so we must deal with accident recovery tactics, instead. What I'm getting at here is, I feel the driver protection standards are not keeping up with the car speed potential, and maybe the track needs some extra early warning visual aids, I know that Nascar use several spotters who have radio contact with their driver, to tell which way to move. I am sure that the events of last weekend will initiate serious discussion on driver and track safety, let's hope it does improve things, wer'e losing real good guys, here.

.
Your exactly right, the cars are just older V8 Supecars, so there specs are the same as the offical V8 supercars.

They are exactly the same cars there are a few older ones ie VXs and AUs but they are all built the same as a V8 supercar
