View Full Version : VY 285 reflash?
Hi guys
Just wanna know if anyone has done a VY 285kw reflash on their Ls1?
I was thinking of doing it to my VT to get rid of that annoying engine light that appares on my dash board and get rid of the pinging at hig revs.
This is a cheaper alternative for me now, then down the rd i was thinking of getting a custom ls1 edit.
Just want to know if anyone has had a reflash done to their pcm to fix a problem and how their car went after that?
cheers guys.

The VY 285kW had bigger headers (1 3/4"), a more free-flowing exhaust, a bigger MAF pipe and a better airbox. If you put a 285kW tune in, I'm sure that your car will still ping, if your VT's bolt-ons don't match the 285KW Clubby's bolt-ons

My cars currently got a custom twin 2 and half inch exhaust with Try-y pacemaker extractors, running 2 hotdogs aswell. Ive got a KN box filter also.
Yeh the guy said to me the VY tune will elminate the pinging and get rid of the light. If that doesnt get rid of the pinging i dont know what will.
Cheers mate.

Could be a fuel problem. Do you run it on 98 RON?

Yeh BP ultimate.
Cheers mate
Mate your best and safest bet is to speak to one of the forum sponsors and get them to look at it and possibly go with a mail order tune. Mail Order Tunes are a lot cheaper than a full custom tune, and are still reasonably tailored to your mods.
Have a chat to one of the melb sponsors such as Chev, G&D, APS, GM Motorsport, etc. They are sure to set you straight!

I'm positive it'll ping - mine did

The 285 tunes upper timing table has been smoothed too much and as a consequence has too much timing in some cells and too little in others. The knock settings are also quite aggressive in learning toward the lower table which is where most stock tuned 285 HSVs must spend a fair bit of their time.
My guess is if one is logged after a fresh pcm load they will show their true colours. They will ofcourse give a big performance gain over a stock VT or VX tune - but its not a good way to go. Thats my opinion anyway.

It will ping even worse , and the injector scaling will also be wrong for your car.
If it is pinging std then I would suggest getting it tuned properly as it would be dangerous to do a mail order on one with a issue such as yours.
Drive direct to your closest tuner .

A common problem with older LS1s is blocking fuel filters - initially it likely leans them out (stock they are quite rich) during this period they probably go better than ever and then a bit later it becomes dangerous.
Engine light could be any number of things. Its worth getting checked at Holden at the very least.
Cheers guys.
I'll prob get the problems fixed b4 i do any edit on it.

I have read the responses and agree that your best bet would be to go to someone like GM Motorsport so that you get an accurate picture of what's going on. Even things like the VT intake manifold is different to VX onwards etc. It's worth it to prevent the damage that could be done otherwise

Thread is a tad old, but your advice is correct mate - a custom tune to suit your mods is by far the best way. Welcome to the forum.
cheers,
