I have seen in many Car yards a clear plastic film they put over the front of bonnets and stuff to help eliminate stone chips.
My question is would that same stuff be Ok to use on headlights to prevent them from being sand blasted.
Not sure if the sticky stuff would eat into the plastic lens cover.

Can anyone comment

would it be cheaper and quicker to repleace this than the headlight cover if not the headlight.

Guess it depends on how much damage you do removing the adhesive when the time comes, you cant use abrasives and even presol may dull polycarbonate so I dont know, I have known about the film for years but never used it, Plus my lenses are as new 4 or 5 years later, heaps of country driving too...

I put some of the film on my camaro bonnet and front guards about 3 months ago to try and protect the new paintwork. I can say that I don't have any stonechips where the film is, but I cant say the same for where it is not. typical qld country roads I'm afraid.
You have to look hard to see that it is on there. Will have to wait and see how it stands up to time and road grime. One thing I do, I dont wash or wax at right angles to the edge of the film to minimise the build up of dirt at the edge of the film.

I looked into getting the film for my VY for the headlights. It is about $90 for the film and then you have to apply it. I opted for the holden light covers.

I ran stick-on headlight covers on an old Camry. 3 years of country driving, they were still fine.
Perspex covers scrath up a lot quicker than polycarbonate. They get dirt trapped behind them, and IMO just look crap!

There were things being sold in KMart (and other places) a couple of years back called "Light Skinz" - thickish (2-3mm) stick on filmfor headlight protection.

Dunno whether they are still sold - guess with the move to polycarbonate light lenses for most cars they lost their market a bit.

I still put the Aunger protectors over my Polycarb VY lights as I noticed they get sand blasted easily. The perspex covers polish up easily and just need a clean every couple of months. Rain-X on them and the headlights helps make the grime drop off easily with just a hosing when you wash too.

Try a dirtbike shop. They are sold to put over headlight's on motorbikes. Being a thick plastic film, they are also impact absorbing, protecting the lens' from rock's/stones etc... I had them on the driving light's of my senator whenI got it, and they'd been on for about 100,000km and the lenses underneath were fine. Mind you, the sandblasting effect on the plastic was that there was dust bedded into the plastic film, so the driving light's didn't actually light anything up, but I suppose him leaving them on for 100,000km was a bit excessive anyway.
