Hi guys,
I am after an electrical wiring diagram for the VE Commodore, so we can look at a few mods:
- park assist on front - activation wiring for low speed sensing
- park assist on rear - any connectivity to head unit (the HSVs have the rear sensors operating on the screen, so I suspect the wiring is there)
- stereo head unit - status of DVD in, amp connections and anything interesting. Looking to retrofit 8" TFT screens in the back of the headrests and a DVD player either in the back of the console under the vents, or in the boot (accessed thru the boot port hole), plus a HD DVB TV unit.
I need either the original workshop manuals or an aftermarket one... Do these exist?
John.

Holden no longer print workshop manuals for current models - all of the info you require is on CD-ROM from your friendly Holden dealer.
$2500 for the VZ ones last time I checked. The alternative is to find a dealer that will print you a copy of what you need from their workshop CDs.

$2500? Are you serious? I thought it was about $200.

Tried to get some for a customer a couple of years ago when I worked for a sponsor Holden dealer. Things could've changed, but it was considered intellectual property, and Holden priced it accordingly.
Earlier models were available for the price you mentioned.

That's what I thought. $2500 is just blatant highway robbery. The only people who would be paying this price are mechanics and workshops who really need them.

These discs contain information that 99.9% of people would have no hope of understanding. They are the same as the dealer workshops have, minus the security features that are only for dealer use. They are NOT your average Gregory's, which many seem to compare them to....

wait for gregory's to pull one apart and make a book.

Some of the accessory firms put orders in for workshop CDs some months before the release of new models so that when the release happens, they have the info on wiring diagrams, etc. $2500 is a big ask for some folks like us that just want it for a casual reference, but then you're installing electrical items to four of them a day for a couple of dealers, it quickly pays for itself.
I heard it was to stop the Ultra-Turd boys getting the edge on the service departments, but another Holden rep laughed when I repeated this.

Boyces Auto Data cds are the cheapest but you'll have to sign up with them and you can rent them for $70.00 per month.

Holden's retail disc for VZ has just been released for about $500. VE is not available yet.

Hi Dave,
Any movement on the VE manual yet?

Nope. You will have to be quite patient, as I wouldn't expect a "non dealer copy" disc for at least a year.
A note for everyone with VE. These use a wiring system where one cable can be used for more than one task. Cut the wrong wires, and you will bugger up other components from working anymore.

I'm sure the moment the G8 starts selling in the US a copy will arise ;)

My central console keeps cutting out. Its going back to the dealer to check out the main power cable connections etc, but Id like a wiring diagram myself so I can trace the problem.
I think its just the main power into the unit as once its dead nothing works. I suspect a dry join somewhere, maybe where the power hits the circuit board.
If someone wants to pdf the wiring for the audio/aircon console let me know :)
These discs contain information that 99.9% of people would have no hope of understanding.
I'm 99.9% sure most people are more intelligent than many mechanics that work at Holden. And by that I mean, could read, understand and interpret the information on the CD, or at least learn what it means.
Why imply that 99.9% of people are dumb? :flipoff:
Cause hes read most of your posts?

I'll agree.. Most Holden Techs are dumb arses. LOL about the quote earlier about more than 1 signal coming down one wire.. Welcome to Multiplex wiring, for those of us that work on systems quite a bit more advanced than your typical car electrical system this is pretty basic shit.. But then again we are talking about Holden Techs so perhaps Multiplex hasn't made it to the vocabulary quite yet.

So does anybody know if a VE workshop manual or CD-ROM is available yet ?

I asked a few weeks ago. I think they said it is "coming soon" vs the time before when it was "no idea". It will be on disk and similar price to VZ (~$500).
The VE body manual has been out for some time now (~$135).
Dealers access all the info on line out of the US. Maybe a friendly dealer might print a page or two for you. :)

He probably meant the GMLAN/CAN. There is now a low speed CAN as well as the hi speed CAN (GMLAN). GMLAN handles all the more critical functions (ABS/ESP/TCM/ECM), while the low speed CAN handles more of the non (time) critical monitoring/entertainment/comfort/nav functions and has more than a dozen modules across it. Cut that and your in the doo doo.

Yep I'm well aware of the GM lingo for multiplex systems.

So you would know that they are not actually "multiplex" systems. Much more sophisticated than mere "mux" ing. :teach:

CAN bus is in no way multiplexing, it isn't even in the same league as multiplexing. CAN bus is still serial, one command on the bus at one time, he who holds the most dominant ID wins... Until it becomes a switched environment it won't compete with multiplexing. Think of CAN bus as a very simplistic broadcast based communications network.
That's my understanding of it anyways :)

Yep...LAN. Packet based shared access media.

Thanks all for your input into explaining to those that think they know better what systems GM use.
I don't pretend to know the finer points of it all, so chose to describe it in a simplistic manner most could comprehend. I freely admit I'm one of the 99.9% of people that would have no hope of understanding all of the info on these discs, and I've accessed the "dealer" SIP version a bit! If all of you ever got the chance to look at SIP, you'd all start to comprehend why I originally said 99.9% of people will never understand it all! :teach:

You can get access to the manuals online:

You need a subscription, but you can try it free for 24 hours.

VE and G8 there, but VZ seems empty. Impressive service. Holden manuals have come of age.

Oh dear...oh dear...
So do I need an engineer or technician?
Maybe a motor mechanic with a fancy bit of gear?
Get out of the office & onto the floor...

While the Pontiac man getting round the net has some handy info is missing quite a bit also, probably better to subscribe via the Delco site & print what you need, very cheap as well.

All the Pontiac sources I've seen on the www have the incorrect manual gearbox info. Some clown has used Corvette gearbox (which is attached to the diff) info and called it Pontiac GXP manual trans.
And of course because it's Pontiac and not VE:
a) it shows info for L76 AFM engine and not L98 (no AFM).
b) Info will only be current up until MY 2009
c) Info will be to suit a left hand drive car
d) There's a ton of wiring differences between a VE and a G8
