View Full Version : Is there anyway to prove how much the XA GTHO Ph 4 is worth?

What is the best way of finding out what the one and only road-going XA GTHO Phase 4 (now owned by a dentist) is worth?
I am arguing with a friend over it’s value compared to the rarest (and therefore most expensive) possible combination of the XY GTHO Phase 3.
Is there any way of proving or getting an estimate as to their worth (I think that PH 3’s are starting to reach $400k).
I am not after your personal opinions here, I just want some cold hard figures so that we can sort out who is right. The discussion is becoming quite animated, and neither of us will budge from our personal view.
disclaimer - This is a purely theoretical question, neither of us can afford one.

My dad always says 'somthing is only worth what sombody is prepared to pay'. Well i would be prepared to pay $5000, so you have a price.
Kinda like the one about the bloke going up to the girl in a bar and askign her if she would sleep with him for a million bucks. She says yes.
He says what about half a mil? again she says yes.
$10k? I guess so.
Five bucks? She says 'what do you think I am'?
He says 'we already worked out what you are, now we are haggeling over the price'.
Ok the joke is not really the same, just thought I would put it in anyway...

fair market value
"Definition
The price that an interested but not desperate buyer would be willing to pay and an interested but not desperate seller would be willing to accept on the open market assuming a reasonable period of time for an agreement to arise. "
There has been talk that it could bring $1m but unless it actually goes to the market we'll never ever know.

Well considering there was only 4 Phase 4's made (try saying that fast, heh) I would imagine the real deal phase 4 would be worth a shiteload. And people would be prepared to pay it, judging by the absurd amounts of coin people have dropped on Phase 3's lately.
That Bryan Byrt Phase 3 (the Bathurst racer) is rumoured to have sold for $700,000 and the one-off Onyx Black Phase 3 that was owned by Athol Guy (or was it someone else?) was rumoured to have sold for $400,000. Or it could be the other way around because im not sure, but I have heard the rumours that one of those two cars went for $700,000 or something equally silly.
I reckon given the extreme rarity of a Phase 4, you would have to look at a rough figure of $500,000.

Is it a real one? Plenty of fakes out there. If it is a real one any chance of getting some pics as I would love to see it.......I would classify it as Rocking Horse Do Do. As someone siad, its worth what the market is prepared to pay, and that will depend on rarity, untouched condition, and collectability. It has two of them so providing the third criteria is good, the sky is the limit. Got to be $250+.

Is this Phase 4 a Calypso Green...a few years back there was a rumour that a dentist owned one of only three of four Phase 4's.
Shannons just auctioned of a Phase 3 in Onyx black for $400 000.
Two of the Brambles red PHASE 4's are owned by Rod Mann and some ex racing car driver (I think Dick Johnson)..rumour was Mann was offered $ 250 000 ten years ago and knocked it back..this was when the Phase 3 was getting $ 150 000
At the end the older they are the more theyre worth...

The most expensive Phase 3 ever sold was the Onyx Black Phase 3 with windback sunroof and a 8 track player for $400 000...Bought by a Builder last month at a Shannons Auction...Info from " Unique cars"

What about the purple Bryan Byrt one? That one was sold recently for a lot of money, it was in race trim and still signwritten etc (and original)

A Phase IV will never be worth as much as a Phase III. It has no racing pedigree. And as it was never sold to the public, how does anybody know what a Phase IV actually is, what parts it should contain or hard it is supposed to go?

Its just a stupid question, until its put up for auction u will never know exactly what someone will pay for it.
Its value will vary incredibly depending who's got te cash and emotion to buy it on the day.
As for a definete value, well its a one owner XA, 30 yr old thirsty V8, maybe $5,000 it would be good for towing.

Rumour was $975,000. It was the one the Bowdens owned, and even though they rarely part with their cars, at that price well....
So what do you do after that, you buy a few more to replace it. So they they bought Dick Johnson's collection - the 81 XD, 84 XE, 85-86 Mustang, 89 Sierra an the EB and AU v8 supercars. THe two Bathurst winners (81 XD and 89 Sierra) will stay in Dick's museum while the other's will be restored and possibly raced.
It's in this months Muscle Car mag.

places like Australian muscle car sales, they over price some cars how ever.
its worth as much people are willing to pay,
GT's are falling in price if people have noticed, the market is up and down at times, its just unpredictable.

the best part is
how many XA's have the running gear and extras fitted standard?
from what i've heard after the super car scare of the 70's, ford slowly got rid of these cars in other forms of cars, like the optioned fairmonts and so on..............

IMHO
Sentimental, thus collector value.
Something like Alan Moffats race machine would be worth 500-700K (and had frig all performance add-ons by todays standards). Lets face it HO (in its day) simply stood for an acronym that amounted to Handling Option, As to the phase 4 who knows it was never released as far as I know.

Haven't the Bowdens got a Brambles red one with QLD plates 'GTH-04'?
