Hey Guys, just wondering if anyone has had much experience with the rear main seal and backing plate that centres it on a gen 3.
I have killed reverse in the box and have given the car to my mechanic to repair. Problem is I had some dodgy mech do a replacement clutch in it a couple of years ago and for some reason he removed the backing plate that centres the main seal. Anyway my mech reckons there's silastic around the backing plate but says he can't remove it without buying an $814 tool from holden.
My problem is this... He's saying that maybe the silastic is there because the crank sensor seal is shot... The car has 185000 on it.
So my questions are ? Is the cranl seal a common prob at these kays and can this plate be removed and replaced without the 800+ tool from holden???
Any help would be much appreciated ...

rear main oil seal certainly is not as common on the holden v6 engine but it does occur.Cam sensor seal is also quite common and a leaking one can be mistaken for a r.m.o.s ,and if you want to replaced rear main seal and plate you will require tool from a Holden dealer to align plate

The rear main plate and seal should be replaced as assembly as with that amount of km's it would be warped, you dont need the aligning tool to do this job, there a simple method of aligning the re main plate,a good mech will know to do,the ones that dont need the tool.

You don't need a special tool, Just need to know how to do it properly. Make sure that it is the rear main though, people have been caught out by this before...

i have an oil leak as well which, by experience, looks like a rear main. what else goes that leaves oil around the bottom of the bellhousing so i can order up everything and replace it all at once? saves time in the future.
cheers

Just becareful,on the left hand side of the block at the rear where the block and sump meet, theres a oil pressure passage ,where the oil pressure travels thru the sump, to the engine, the sump seal goes hard over time and it leaks out from there ending up at the rear of the engine and inside the bellhousing, becareful to check this properly as we had a vehicle in last week that had his rear main seal and plate changed 3 times by 3 diff shops and all along it was the sump seal, hope this helps :)
