Living under a rock as I do, I'd never heard a VZ HSV run through the gears until a few days ago.

I saw a guy in a black VZ Clubby on the corner of King and Bourke Street here in Melbourne the other day. This car was completely stock. He sort of pulled up to park but then decided he'd go round the block.

He took off half urgently, running the car through the gears at about 3,500 rpm, and I must say the noise that came out was rather disappointing. I was expecting a nice burble, perhaps something like a VZ Monaro or at least as good as the quieter (but still burbly) VY-VZ SSs.

But no, this thing made a vacuum cleaner like V8 sound. Yeah it was deep, but no throbbing V8 note, no perceptible burble as you would get in a VZ Monaro.

The VZ Monaro sounded amazing so I'm just disappointed HSV decided they didn't need to tune the VZ exhaust more. Its as though they just installed a set of pipes, thought yep, thats got the right volume, and away they went.

What do others think? Did HSV get it right or did Holden do a better job with the VZ Monaro?

The VZ Manaro had a much better job done to it than the Clubby. i own a VZ R8 and i agree it sounded like a vacum cleaner, sure it had a v8 sound but not one bit of throbbing v8 sound.

first thing i did was change the exhaust and now it sounds awsome a really deep burble sound.

Holdne and HSV standard all sound like V6s with thermo fans!

Unfortunately the new ADRs Jan 1 2006 mean an audible burble is almost out of the question stock. You have to go aftermarket and 'technically' illegal to get that throb. The VZ Monaro took Holden 3-4 goes to get passed apparently and it would've been noise as much as anything else that killed it.

I agree with Dacious on this one. The manufacturers simply have to put crappy, over muffled systems on to pass ADRs re idle and drive-by noise etc.

That is why the aftermarket comes in to play.

And rest assured, MOST, if not ALL of us with aftermarket pipes ARE too loud. If you fly under the radar, no worries, but if you get pinged, then be prepared to find an oem system to put on for a re-test, or be prepared to shell out $$$ in fines if done at a roadside EPA testing station.

Still, I wouldn't have my lumpy, rumpy cammed exhaust any other way!!!

Cheers,

Macca

Considering where he was I hardly think he would have been peaking it out at the 6600 rpm rev limit.:driving:

Should't need to hit 6,00 to know it an 8. I drove a HSV GTS and thought the note was woosy at all revs to say the least IMO, even though the salesman bragged about it!!

Give Brad at Mr Muffler Sumner Park a call - cool dudes and definately take the time to meet your needs - customer first and old days values!!

I think that they have done particularly well with the VZ Monaro, I think it has something to do with the cam change.
