Hi Guys,

I'm not sure how the hell i stuffed up my calculations on the weekend when changing my oil, but i've added too much oil.
I can only blame it on failing my 1 times table at school!!!
What problems will i incounter with too much oil going the engine?

Justin

The engine would usually just burn off the excess oil really.

How much oil is too much?
I overfill by up to 500ml, helps combats oil surge.

How much did you overfill??, half up the stick or just over the mark.
If its just over the mark, a couple of mm, then its ok. Remember that a couple over the mark ,is still quite allot of extra over the enitre surface in the sump. If its too much drain some!!

If you have gone over the 500mL over fill, that is a normal practice, at the least you can expect oil burning and possibly some oil leakage. At the worst you may aerate the oil and end up with frothy oil passing through your engine. If this happens say goodbye to your bottom end as frothy oil doesn't work in soft metal bearings.

Do you self a favor and drain the excess oil out. If you want to really be pedantic, drain the lot and then measure the correct amount ( with a maximum of 500mL over fill ) and then refill.

Simon.

I get mine dealer serviced and after sitting overnight it is always above the full mark, it is usually just into the first bump of the ripple section on the dip stick, every service I have had it is always filled to there, been at that level for the past 5 years so the dealers seem to put more in or the fact that after sitting overnight I get a higher reading than they do when checking after filling. Never had a problem with mine and after 5000km it is usually still in the same spot maybe a ml or so lower.

Thanks Gentleman,

I'm sure it's pretty close to 8 litres. I haven't driven it since sunday which she run really well. I'll tackle the job in the next few days.
I've always had the oil level sitting dead on the top of the cross-hatch section & never had to add any during the 10,000 service period.

I run an extra 1L in mine to stop surge, have never had a problem.

It's apparently common practice to run an extra .5 litre in the US. 8 litres sounds like a little much. I'd drain a couple cups full until it is at least at the s-bend.

I put 6 litres in mine when i change the oil and its over full.

8 litres is way too much, take a couple back out.

if any part of the rotating assembly (crank etc) hits the oil then it will "shear" destroying oil properties and additives... this is due to heat caused....

I would think running an extra 0.5l would be no issue..

if you have run it with 8L then i would change out the oil..

Thanks too as I went about 2 mm over the full mark and I was a bit paranoid.
But it you can run 500mm up to a litre too much then I am fine now.

I have always run 6L in my VY, and thats seen plenty of action, i believe this was based on what the boys do with the V8 Brutes to stop surge problems...

I have to say, i did a change on my E Series R8, and F#$k me, honestly, it had like 8L in it from the factory!!! i put 5L in and the oil warning light came on, i now have around 7L... It dosnt say in the service manual exactly how much to put in, just fill it until the level is right on the dip stick
