Got back from the Monaro Nationals last night-an AWESOME event!
We left Melbourne Thursday midnight- arrived at Loxton about 8.00am friday, for event admittance & scrutineering. There was a "meet & greet" that night.
Saturday was the main event on the Loxton Oval-show/shine-200+ cars, & some GREAT Monaros of all descriptions, including one HQ with a 565 c.i. Big Block which shook the ground when it came in. All cars had a predetermined space & the display was fantastic. Had a great chat with special guest, Leo Pruneau, who arrived in a red VE GTS courtesy of John Crennan.
Presentation dinner was Saturday night, held in basketball Stadium- again, well organised with 600+ in attendance, lovely food, plenty of it, & quick service. Some MASSIVE Monaro advertising on the walls! ALL entrants received a framed picture of their car, & winners were presented with their trophy with the aid of an excellent audio visual system.
Sunday was time for the drags, held at Waikerie Gliding Club Airstrip. Some VERY quick cars, including the 565 Big block, plenty of smoke-from some of the concourse cars as well-lots of wheelspin & plenty of noise!
Monday was time for the rally.-Around 120k of the local area. Very entertaining & followed by a Bar-B-Q.
Our Motel in Berri was very good, with individual under cover parking. We left Berri around 8.00am Tuesday, comong back via Pinaroo & the Mallee H'way, then via Hopetoun, Warracknabeal, St Arnaud, Ballarat, Melb. Some EXCELLENT driving on country roads, until we hit the Freeway at Ballarat, which wasn't so good--all drivers sitting on 112-115k--difficult to get a spot from which to avoid stonechips!
But, overall, a magnificent event, congratulations must go to the Monaro Club of South Australia, who obviously went to an enormous amount of trouble to make sure everything went well--& it certainly did!
We travelled just over 2000ks in the GTO.
And yes, we all heard the news of the HK 327 making $220k at Shannons. One owner of a nice original "327" even put a sign on his dashboard reading "All offers over $250k considered"!
Cheers, Pickles.
