The ute is about to reach the end of the 3 year new car warranty period.
No problems to date but you know Murphy's Law..........

Is there anything I could hit Holden up for under warranty that would cost me in the near future?

So you want to see if they'll replace something just for the fun of it?

Why would you want them to find a problem? I'd be damn happy that you've had no issues in 3 years :D

I think it is a fair question...maybe check for any noises coming from the drivetrain(diff,trans/clutch ect)...cant hurt...once its out of warranty you are the one forking out for this stuff

I would rather work on it myself than leave it in their hands "for the fun of it"
Looking to head off any costly items that aren't designed to be durable

Helpful replies only folks

Ok, after 3 years of driving,,,,,,

listen really carefully for piston slap noises, power steering noises, front end noises from the sway bar link, diff clunk, wobbly brakes and if you hear none of the above, you have either

a/ not bought a holden VY

or

b/ are very lucky, so take the missus out for a celebratory dinner and toast the success of your good purchase.

Get a real good pre warranty check done by ur mechanic, get them to run over the car with a fine tooth comb ! we have done this many times and had items replaced ,last one i did, needed a new diff tailshaft and c.v joints, dealer try to dipspute it,quick chat to the dealer had them replaced ,though there is a down side, they didnt tighten the c.v shafts properly and as the customer was entering the freeway under power the c.v shaft flew off,wen he rang them and had it towed bak, they try to charge him for it :lmao: ,in the end he had to pay for the tow and the missing bolts and they did the labour, customer wasnt happy at all....

Gotta watch those extended warranty's as i,ve seen many ppl deceived by those warranty's as they are "devlishly" worded. a word they like using is "wear & tear"

yes, and extended warranties can also end up costing the poor dealership who you take it back to have the work done, and after the dealership has forked out for a $4000 gearbox plus lost time in labour their not usually too happy to see you any more, because the extended warranty you took out is worded so they end up paying for it.

I know your thinking "so, as long as I dont pay for the repairs" but just think how un happy the dealership is then, and no, its not the customers fault, its bloody good wording on the contract.

Although get a trusted second mechanic to look at it and get his thoughts, then get Holden to do a pre warranty inspection and get there thoughts and see if they match, because the other thing is if Holden do an inspection and miss something then it dies after the warranty period they should fix the issue free :deal:

yeh, i have a holden used car certfied warranty im about to void.
the alleged extra resale will only be a portion of the premium i will pay for maintenence.

extended warranties are on thier terms, not australian regular terms...
im going to try get a new set of valve springs on mine without admitting ive been on a dyno.

also, my shifter makes a noise but i want a rip shifter so not too worried about that.

my abs and traction light come on sometimes, see if they can get rid of that.
then im going to have chev service it continually.

im going to run the gauntlet and hope nothing bad goes wrong. might pay to have chev do a all over on it and see if anything else needs replacing.

My VY is now out of warranty (Apr 06) and it has recently developed a distinct cold rattle at 67k. Sounds like a bloody tractor !!!. I did everything I could, listened diligently for any sign of problems and had convinced myself I had a good one.

My view with Holden is if you have some major jobs done before the warranty runs out you are lucky.

I believe the NRMA in NSW do inspections and provide a written report that can be taken back to the dealer. Small price to pay.

Have the steering rack checked out. They have a habit of dying just after warranty.

On my VX SS I sheared the tail shaft in half 3 days after the warranty expired. RACV covered the cost of the tow and in the end Holden replaced the tail-shaft for free. There were no indications that it was about to go and even if I had a full check done on the car, it wouldn't have surprised me if this was missed. How many mechanics doing a pre warranty check would look to see if the welds on the tail shaft had failed ?

Holden can be very fair with "after warranty" claims. Don't go thinking that as soon as midnight, the day the warranty ends, that you are on your own. It may be harder to claim, but you can still get things done. Don't forget that you are still covered for things like call backs so Holden doesn't just turn its back on you. The aim of the game here is to be "fair" not just try and screw every cent out of Holden.

In this case I think Sonny's advice is a great course of action. You won't be able to just claim random items, but if you get the car checked and faults are found, you now have some professional backing to go to Holden with.

Simon.

Some dealers treat warranty work as just another way of earning money, other dealers tell you they are booked out for warranty work but can do your service work straight away :cussing:

Get someone who's familiar with the product to do a completely thorough check - and I don't mean the R-A-Screw-You or any of the other useless auto club inspection services. $150 to tell you what your mechanic should be telling you every service is laughable.

When the check is done, get the mechanic to highlight what makes the vehicle unroadworthy and go to the dealer with the report. Don't leave it until the last minute, do it with plenty of time before the warranty runs out.

Cheers

JOHN

Does anyone know how you go with Holden used car statutory warranties? I bought a VY out of warranty through a Holden dealership in Qld and it obviously came with the 3 month warranty that they have to provide by law.

I'm going to have my car checked out by a mechanic soon, but if anything comes up, would I be covered or do you get totally screwed with a non Holden warranty? Like would the diff or gearbox be covered for example? I notice there's occassionally a bit of a clunk when you select first gear - nothing major at all - but still, would this be something I could bring up?

Thanks
