Hey all,
My girl and are I have dirt bikes and of course are looking to go out and have some fun in the dirt. I've easily taken one bike as you just put it on an angle, raise the tail gate, and tie it down to the 2 front corners.
I'm wondering how easy is it to carry 2 bikes. I know the tailgate will be down when driving, and I don't really want to drill any holes or anything. Does someone have any pics of their setup, and what would be the best way to do this.
Cheers

afaik, 2 bikes are no go.
bike trailer is your safest bet...
assuming they are full sized motox, they will be hanging out a mile.

me and a mate put our bikes, xr400 and drz400 in the back of an xh falcon ute. i would assume that its very similar length to a commodore ute. the back wheels are usually on the join between tray and the tailgate, which is of course, down.
some good fun to be had out in the brindies on a dirtbike, we go fairly regularly.
put 2 bikes on mine all the time. an xr650 and a ktm525. they fit no worries.

I also have no problems fitting 2 bikes in the ute, To hold the tailgate up I put a strap through the rear wheels and the tailgate cables and winch the tailgate up to the rear wheels, it goes up about 70 %. and it stops things sliding out
2 trail bikes, all the gear, food for a couple of days, and the beer esky.

I have seen a setup on a vg ute where you remove one of the cables for the tailgate, and replace it with a flat bit of metal.
The metal bar was just long enough to attach with the tailgate pulled up firm against the rear wheels like mentioned above.

I find that if you get a long tie down strap, tie it through the wheels and then slot it around into the groove in the tailgate where the tonneau cover clicks into, then back into the rear wheels of the bike and tighten. Tailgate will sit up at approx 45 deg, but its better than having it jumping up and down as you are travelling.

tie the handle bars together in the middle and tie it down ,one from each bar, thats how i do it, works a treat

I can fit 2 road bikes in the back of my VU no probs.I just got my self a tie down bar from www.smartarsedesigns.com.au takes about 45min to fit and off you go.
BUT one bit of advice some Insur comps will NOT cover you if you tailgate is open more than 8 inches. As they claim your door is adjar (sp?) but tail the tailgate is off your fine.

Ive had two road bikes, my SV and my mates R1 in tha back of the VU no worries, as others have said you can either have the tailgate down, or find some way to hold it up a bit with straps etc...

Do you use anything to secure the front wheels in? I got told by one guy to angle the front wheels into each corner but I'm not sure how stable that would be. I was hoping not to have to drill holes to fit a bike vice, but I'm thinking its what I'll have to do.
Thanks heaps for your replys

No. Just put your bikes straight in the back and tie them down, they wont go anywhere.

Thats it, just use a tie down on each side for each bike, and your set, compress the forks a little (2 man job) as you tightne them, and you're off, bikes wont go anywhere.
Deanhoe ive got a VU II as well, thats all i do, and mines slammed on pretty stiff springs, bikes dont ever look like moving...

Hey VU_SS_UTE,
Well if you're doin it easy with 2 road bikes then I shouldn't have too much trouble with 2 dirt, one being a smaller bike too for the girl.
I'm just abit worried having only the bikes tied down to the 2 corner parts, will it be stable or will they move around. The bike vice sounds very tempting from smarty pants, is that what you fitted and how easy was it too fit? Guess I'm just paranoid about scratching any of my babys. Heaven forbid if the girls bike fell off. :)

I dont have anything in the back, the tray is how it rolled out of Holden.
I just have the front tire(s) against the bar at the back of the cabin. I usually put the tire in one of the grooves if you like on the tray, but i dont think it would matter.
Then just have one person standing over the bike, and compress the forks as you pull the tie-downs tight, i have one going to each front corner. With it done the forks should be a fair way down and you can shake the hell out of the bike it wont move.
I usually put either another tie-down or one of those occy strap things at the back, holding the swingarm toward the side of the ute, but thats only with two bikes in there.
The smarty pants vice thing seems like a good idea, but not worth it for me who only moves bikes once a month or so.
It would be good I guess for piece of mind, but I've never had a problem with 2 bikes using only 4 tie downs...
I'll try take a snap with the phone next time we do it, but hopefully you should get the idea already
Cheers
