I am hoping I can get some advice from you guys as I am not sure if I want a GTO or a "normal" monaro.
The monaro is going to be cheaper so I can save some money or get a newer car compared to the equivalent GTO.
Can someone explain the differences and pro's and cons of each car?
I am afraid I just don't know that much about the differences.
GTO's seem to start at a minimum of about $45k but I would probab;y have to pay $55k to get something with low kilometers.
Any information appreciated :D
cheers

GTO's have the body kit, wheels, better brakes, suspension, better diff gears, nicer interior and the enjoyment that comes from owning a HSV.
Monaro's have a cheaper purchase price so you can spend more on doing the mods yourself rather than what HSV modded for you.

It depends, if you want to modify it, go for the monaro, but if you want the looks, I would definetly go for the GTO, that GTO badge on the bottom front makes it all worthwile. Both awesome cars. But if you are talking about a VZ Monaro, that changes things a little. They look just as nice as a GTO

thats what i was thinking, if its a CV8z, hard to go past.
Depends what your plans for it are, that would be a factor in your decision

you got any mods planned???

Damn you guys are quick :)
I definitely have mods planned and have done some research and am leaning towards the gen tt kit.
Haven't done enough research into blowers so will make up my mind after I do that.
Might just start out with a tune and exhaust etc then take it from there.
Depends which one I get though as GTO would not leave as much funds for mods as a monaro would.
Are the brakes and driveline a lot better on the GTO?
Or is it marginal?
Seems like a really tough choice to me...

hmmm
monaro + gentt
or
Gto ....
i know which i'd take ... but dont forget the GTO has beter standard brakes which you may need to look at replacing if you got the monaro ...
if you are serious about the GenTT kit ... dont waste time/money with the boltons ... wait and go the whole shebang ... eg. dont get extractors and you wont need those with the kit ...
if you must do some mods before the genTT. stick with a catback (suitable for the GenTT) and 2hole mod ...
anything else would be a waste seeing that you plan on slapping the snails on

Do you need a boot? If so a VYII or SIII era GTO might be the go. LS1 not LS2, but if turboing the LS1 has a lower comp which is perhaps more suitable.

If you're going to mod it, go the Monaro, if you like them std go the HSV.

How much are you able to spend-$40-$45-$50-$55k, or more?
What you are able to buy, depends, to a large degree, upon what you want, or are able, to spend. So, what's your upper limit?

IMO GTO hehe like Voodoo says, a lot more options etc compared to the Monaro even though Monaro is pretty much fully optioned just smaller details etc...

Pickles,
I really don't have a budget that is set in stone.
If I can save money and get maximum value then that is always what I end up doing.
I like to modify stuff and have a jeep setup for serious offroad work and a r33 skyline for daily duties currently.
All work on the new monaro/gto will be carried out by me unless it is very technical as I like to get involved with mods as much as possible.
I probably don't want to spend more than $55k otherwise I may as well go and buy a VE r8 or GTS :)
But then again maybe a decent GTO cannot be had for less than that and I will need to weigh that up.
So the compromise will be what I can buy for $45k compared to what I could get for $55k.
Then add the gto or monaro question into that equation.
Been reading this site a lot and it certainly helps to see what everyone else is up to.
thanks for all the help so far....

No worries, If you are prepared to go to $55k, then you should be able to locate a low mileage, used, VZ GTO. These things are now selling new for $64k + ORC. With the VZ you will get the 6 Litre LS2 engine- the only coupe to get it--a mighty engine! Plus you will get better seats, interior, wheels etc etc. So, that's my recommendation to you--look for a VZ GTO--great value at the moment--& I don't know anyone that is not happy with theirs-we're super happy with ours.
Cheers, Pickles.

I have had a search around and cant seem to find any VZ gto's that are near $55k.
They all seem to be at least $60k.
What year did VZ start? 2005?
I did find two on the cheaper end of the scale with relatively low kilometers.
One is $40k with 53,000km and the other is $44k with 37,000km and they are 2002 GTO "base version"
Not sure what base version means?

VZ started November 2004.....Mine is Dec 2004 and done 52,000km.
Have a drive of each, see if you can spot the difference...probably not a great deal...the GTO will have the 6 litre 297kw, but apart from that, not worth the extra $15,000 u will have to shell out for the GTO.
Good luck, both sensational cars!!

On the subject of GTO prices, has anyone managed to drive away in a used/demo VZ GTO for 57k?
Cheers.
