Mitsubishi's boss in Japan has assured the Federal Government there are no plans to end its Australian operations.

Osamu Masuko has met with the federal Industry Minister, Ian Macfarlane, and South Australia's Deputy Premier, Kevin Foley, in Tokyo.

Mr Masuko says Mitsubishi's board is not considering a plan, which was in a document leaked to the ABC, to close the company's Adelaide factory.

The ministers say media reports about the so-called Project Phoenix should be put to rest.

"We have, I believe, laid to rest the constant speculation that has continued in Australia about the future of Mitsubishi in Adelaide," Mr Macfarlane said.

"On that basis, media speculation about its future should stop."

Doug Cameron of the Manufacturing Workers Union has welcomed Mitsubishi's response.

"The unions are prepared to continue working with Mitsubishi to try and ensure that jobs are maintained in South Australia," he said.

"This is a very important company for South Australia.

"It's very important for the whole Australian manufacturing economy.

"We need more manufacturing jobs, not less."

I'm glad someone has come out and drawn a line in the sand about the constant media circlejerking about Mitsubishi closing the factory. Now all Mitsi need to do is get the 380 on track and they - as well as the Aussie industry - will have a brighter future.

There was a bit on the news tonight (missed part of the story) about Mistsi's selling knockdown 380's overseas (malayaisa i think, or possibly india) which would be a good help and open up some new markets for them.
