G'Day!
Well I know I drive a Ford but dad and I are thinking about buying a car for track days that we'll gradually build up. My idea is to buy a VX SS 6speed as a starting point. We are after something RWD, cheep and powerful. The VX SS gets a tick in all boxes there. Dad and I will be going halves in everything like mods insurance etc...

So, do you Commodore experts think it’s a good idea?

Also what things (problems) should I be looking for when I go looking at one to buy?

Any help would be fantastic!!

Good advice. It'd make a reasonable job as a tow car for their race car.

The VX will be a top track day weapon. just focus on suspention/cooling and driving tequnique (spelling?) The SS will hammer with minor mods such as you will find all over this web site.
Mate go for it! you will love it and Im sure that most blokes on t his forum would love to hear every step of your circuit adventuren!:driving:

Just keep in mind that if you plan on using it for track work quite often you will need a power steering cooler, suspension/brake upgrade, tyres and a kaaz lsd as a bare minimum. Thats even before you go looking at more power.
Will make an excellent track day car!

IMHO you will buy the VX and everything that makes it more expensive than say a VT SS or EXEC LS1 6M you will remove and replace with go fast bits, save the bikkies and get a cheaper version of essentially the same car. Replace all the suspension, light weight rims and sticky tyres, lock up the diff, get a mafless tune for the motor, strip the interior and put in a good seat with a harness and go nuts...... oh and change the stocky clutch cause there poo.

Thanks for that. I'll take it into consideration.

Mechanically what’s the difference between VT SS (Series2) and VX SS?

Alos what’s the difference between VX Exec LS1 M6 and VX SS?

VX SS has the ls6 Manifold

exec vs SS for a track car ??? just wank factor really
FE2 - will chuck that anyway
17" wheels - chuck them in favor of some Lighter 17's
SS interior - enough said
body kit - same again.

Good luck Aeron. You must have a smile as big as Mick Jagger at the moment.

Just remember to give the old man the occasional drive, after all he did pay for half.

As an option, did you look into buying something smaller, more nimble and lighter? Also cheaper to mod and kill as a track bitch? LIke a mid 90's turbo silvia, import evo etc? Can be had in the teens, throw 10k at it and you wouldnt wipe the smile off your face.

Yeh, I would have been happy with a 180SX but dad didnt want a Turbo car. And V8's sound cool! :D

180's make nice track cars :)

But I'm sure you'll be stoked with the SS!

SR's sound a bit shltty, really need an external gate dumping to the ground ;)

Do it!!! Do it now. Theres something to be said for modding a car for circuit or tarmac racing, that believe or not, not many poeple do. Nothing nicer than hearing bitumen hit the floor pan with no carpet and insulation to tell you your off line. They can take some work to make relaible but sound so nice up against a pit wall @ 6500rpm!

If for track use .... simply go a VX Exec V8, save a few dollars dude as suspension, brakes and engine mods are essential. This leave all the 'goodies' from the VXSS such as FE2 package left out in storage.

Track work will draw you in more and more with the need to trim times via handling and torque levels and the biggest factor driver skill. There is no doubt a VXSS (and red) can be quick around tracks, just be prepared for the faster you go, the higher the cost of associated work and repairs.

I ended up running times in the 1.22 at tracks such as Sandown, this after running my first day there in the 1.38's. Talk to the guys that actually run their 'street driven' vehicles that are used at the track, attend a few HSV / HSCC club days and walk pit lane and ask a heap of questions.

I have always found the drivers in Club day activities extremely helpful and open about what has worked and has not worked.

Cheers,

Dane
