View Full Version : Booked for Noise - How Common?

Following on from the thread about the standard VT getting booked for undue noise I was wondering how common it is for people to get booked for noise. Specifically I'm thinking those with loudish to pretty loud exhausts and also how it might vary depending on your location.
(I am currently wanting to change my exhaust to be pretty loud)

Well, I was done a few months ago for being 7db over the 90db limit, they did a proper test on my car in a carpark, I wasnt speeding or doing anything bad at the time of being pulled over either, 1 point and a $70? fine and a yellow slip to make me get it fixed... There cracking down on it allot here...
The other side of things is idiots doing burnouts etc as thats also an 'undue noise' fine but carries a $240 fine, In the end its your licence and cash.

I have only been booked for undue noise years ago in Mt Isa where i grew up, small town so the cops knew me pretty well and i deserved it hehe;) . But I have always wondered how Harley Davidsons get away with the noise that bellows out of them, now they are definitely a prime candidate for an undue noise ticket

I got booked for excessive noise for my exhaust. I was excllerating (fast but not flat out) and a police car 2 cars behind me pulled me over. After disputing the fine via a letter after the event, I was informed that an officer (in WA) can issue an excessive noise infringement if he/she thinks the exhaust is too loud. There is no form of measurement, it is simply up to the officers discretion. PATHETIC!
3 demerit points and $200 fine. I was more than dissapointed and dissillusioned by the legal system in this instance.

In reality, the only ways you will be tested are the following:-
1. Someone complains about your car/noise/driving;
2. You are observed by the coppers doing the wrong thing;
3. You are unfortunate enough to be pulled in to an RWC/EPA checking site/station.
It wouldn't happen too often to forum members who behave themselves, :whip: even though most have exhausts that would definitely give 90db a good nudge.
Cheers,

Completely agree Macca I would speculate that most people having an issue with the boys and girls in blue have done something which caught the eye of the cops. I find it funny how everyone seems to be completely innocent and apparently hard done by!! Well maybe not everyone but the majority...

Yeh I got done years ago "before" the exhaust noise limit came in. Havin a big go droppin the clutch off the line with another guy in the city. All went well, lit up nicely, round the corner, still goin - stright onto the boys in blue who ran out and pulled me over. Not exhaust or any other issue, they went over the car with a fine tooth comb and laid me with an excess noise fine for the wheelspin.
But I remember thinkin it was nice of the younger coppa to come to the drivers window as I was leavin and say "thats the best one I've heard in years".

A mate of mine got a yellow slip for a few things that was wrong with his VN... From a very well known police officer in the eastern suburbs of melbourne.. He ended up having to get an engineers certificate which wasnt a cheap experience, becuase of 6x9 holes cut in the parcel shelf by the previous owner... Unlucky because he got picked up driving out of a carpark sedately. Anyway, long story short, he had to get the exhaust tested.. And his VN Group A with single 3.5inch sat right on 90db - At least luck was on his side for something!

That would be me, many moons ago young and stupid holding 2nd in the ute at 3,500rpm then nailing it as the arse end kicks out, mr unmarked plod pulls me over gives me the lecture and "undue noise" think it was only 80 bucks back then. And yes I have learned my lesson sorta :hide:

I was pulled over for speeding, I didnt turn the car off, policeman started checking around and then issued me a fine plus notified me about my loud exaust (it was a standard sports exaust). few days later I received a letter, telling me to fix my car and go to an EPA center for testing, due to the loud exaust and the "missing CAT" What the hell, my cat was there, my exaust wasnt over the db. I didnt touch the car,went to the epa center and everything went ok, I lost half a day of work thanks to the cop who doesnt know much about cars.

i was pulled over last friday and had my car confiscated for excessive noise. i pulled out onto the highway in the wet and the wheels spun a bit, i backed off as soon as they started to spin, but there was a cop car behind me.
had the car taken for 48 hours, and have just recieved a court summons for excissive noise.
car is a vx ss, with twin 2.5" pipe, no mufflers, or resinators, so shes a bit loud :D
umm yeahh i gotta go to court on the 22nd of december for the charged of excessive noise! havent been told to take the exhaust off yet tho ?

Must sound crap - they need a muffler to take the harsh edge off. Plus with virtually no back pressure you've probably lost performance and torque.

have to kinda agree with you there i got pulled up by some unmarked coppers a few months back and they said the ute was not loud at idle so it must be the driver making it loud by my driven and thats wat grabed there att???? ok not to shore how that works but thats wat they said ... and in WA undew and exesive noise carrys a 3 point and $150 fine ... well when i got done for locking up the tonner a few good years back now thats wat i copped
