View Full Version : Picked Up my VE GTS - Wow!

Hi All

I picked up my VE GTS last week, took it up for a drive to Sunshine Coast on the weekend, wow what a vehicle.

My GTS is M6, Sting Red with the red performance leather! It looks great.

Drive impressions are fantastic! This things is so compliant in the ride department, much better than my GTO; even on track setting!

The steering is amazing, it goes where you point it, no nervous half turn corrections needed.

Passengers have been impressed by the comfort and space, the seats are wonderful, they hold you well and I imagine they will be fantastic after an all day drive. The VE seems much wider, lots of space between the seats. I had three in the back seat, no complaints, lovely under thigh support and lots of comfort. Do that in your corolla on a long trip!

I am most impressed by the gearbox. Compared to my GTO, the clutch is 4cylinder light, the gear shift is so close and much more direct. It is a real improvement, no trouble at all like the GTO which would often have problems from going from 2nd to 3rd when under load. I don't do a lot of stop start driving so auto makes no sense to me. For those considering a manual, it really is much better than the old ones!

The brakes....early days. My GTO had premium brakes and these were fantastic. I am still bedding in the brakes and have not done a hard stop yet but my initial impression is the pedal is a bit mushy.

I love all the custom functions, you can set up the car to do what you want and this is a neat feature. The climate control is more effective than the GTO and the pollution mode is good for whern stuck in traffic.

I do miss the priority key and seat memory though, this should be standard, I guess this is a senator feature but it should be available on the GTS.

The boot is massive, love it but do miss the cargo net on the floor. It has a net at the loading lip but this does not go all over the floor like the GTO had. No fire extinguisher either; not that I had to use mine in the GTO.

In summary, a wonderful car, can't wait to drive it some more, I am loving my choice of manual red interior with red paint!

I am unsure how to post pix, can someone please give me advice and I will put some up.

Happy driving!

Good review.
Glad someone purchased the manual and can give some positive feedback on the modifications to the shifter.
Does it feel like it will be good for a 4.96 0-100km/h?
I emailed Motor Magazine about a week back complaining that they still haven't tested a Manual GTS or R8, they replied by saying that despite repeated requests from HSV they were still unable to get hold of a manual.
Thanks for your comments and enjoy the ride!!!

It is early days and I am runnig it in. The engine feels very tight at the top end but I have no doubt it will be quick. The gearchange will contribute to that.

Great to read about the GTS, i cant wait to go for a cruise in one! I want to see what this MRC is like first hand!

I have a thread on a my R8 at Wakefeild, i dont think we will easliy see sub 5 second 0-100, maybe when the engine is run in, maybe with a great lauch putting those 275 standard rears to work might see us there :) The straight line speed is almost identical to a normal edit only VY, so low 13's and around 5flat 0-100... Anyone got a G Tech?

yeah it is a bit of an issue, I am not the tallest bloke around and do like to sit close so I do have to swivel in a bit around the wheel which means I get caught on the seat bolster. If it had the 3 point memory seat like the GTO, you could move it to a rear position and move it back easily. Or you could just slide it rearwards with the electric button and move it forward again. I am interested to see if the "abravisiveness" of getting in wears out the edge of the seat like I have seen on higher mileage earlier models.

maybe you should just never get out of it!

Yeah, I have a G-Tech, just don't have an R8 or GTS to test it on (yet).
I don't think the Hsv dealer would be real impressed if I asked for test drive and then proceeded to mount my G-Tech on the windscreen.

You know I thought I quite liked the look of the GTS, but seeing it beside the GTO, I think the GTO wins hands down purely in the looks dept.
Still wouldn't say no to the VE GTS.

Have had a lot of comments about the styling. The girls at my work have said that the GTO was reaaly nice, a bit soft and smooth to look at, whereas the GTS is beefy, chunky and tough! Thewy would know of course!

I think the shape is growing on me, was sad to see the GTO go but the GTS drives and rides so much better I just think of that when I am having a sad moment.

I do carry passengers at times and while the GTO had lots of space for four inside, my regular backseat passenger said that on occassions they got a bit carsick, no such comments in the GTS, it is great to be in with space and no harsh bumps through the seat.

These cars are just so amazing for the money. Where else can you buy this kind of performance, style and space for the same dollars?

Ive always loved the look of the GTO i always thought they had a real agressive look like they were gonna eat you up, but next to the E series GTS i think the GTO looks (still looks sexy) but looks soft compared to GTS, the GTO doesnt look so tuff anymore.

Both awesome cars and either i would one day love to own

The answer to that is probably nowhere. In Australia there is no better value for money car. Sure $80k+ is not exactly loose change, but for what you're getting its a bargain. A lot of metal for the money.

Ofcourse the Americans have the choice of buying a 6.0 litre V8 Corvette for the type of money we buy a GTS for and that is severely depressing. I'd do anything for that sexy shape and kerb weight.

The pic looks fantastic. While the GTO is sleek, the GTS is a brutal looking thing and thats the direction that styling seems to have taken these days. Stylists are no longer worried about interrupting long flowing lines with something like the big vents in the VE GTS's quarter panels.

Manual is better, but i still had problems with getting 2nd 3rd change a couple of times at wakefeild, so you have to take it slow... It is much smoother than the VY M6 i had ;)

I love a manual. I once had a VT2 Clubby A6 and it was OK, just no immediate power. Then I got the M6 GTO and it was great, except for the 2nd to 3rd gear change.

The M6 in the VE GTS is comlpetely transformed in my opinion. On the way back from the sunshine coast, we hit the usual sunday 8km of ist gear stop start on the highway and I thought, here we go...The clutch was a revelation, light and easy, the electronic throttle was smooth (the GTO had a mechanical throttle and was a bit jerky as you feathered it.

I test drove an A6 GTS and an A6 SSV and in the short test drive, I did not get used to the process of forward = down change, back = up change. I just wanted to put my left foor through the floor.

I thought I would share a few commentrs from my wife about the GTS. Now she is not a big car nut like me, if it makes you happy you should have it is her point of view. (Thanks honey!) She is amazed at the space, comfort and can feel a huge difference in the car from the passenger seat compared to the GTO. She is yet to drive it.

Sorry for the ongoing positive rant... this car is just amazing. For those of you who have one on order, clear your diary around delivery time. For those who don't, do whatever you can legally to arrange to get one.

Grats on the purchase!

I drove the VE clubsport for a couple of days, was very impressed, i stalled it a couple of times when first getting in it, as the take up point on the clutch is very very close to the floor, compared to my m5 ecotech. I did miss 3rd gear 1 or 2 times when really giving it some from a standing start.... Handling was much better than the VZ hsv's, the thing really stuck to the road in all areas. The ass end, once it lets go, was very controllable and predictable.
I did get diff bounce when trying to drop it on one occasion.... cabin noise of the v8 was much better and louder than previous hsv, however the sound of the v8 outside the car.... well ...... 'WAY TOO QUIET!' - i could barely hear the sound of the v8 over the sound of the tyres and gearbox.... sounded awesome in the car, but needs to be way louder outside the car. after giving it some very spirited driving on a decent trip, the computer estimated 160k remaining from 3/4 tank of fuel!

Another thing that was really cool was the ability to pair the car stereo with any bluetooth capable phone - which means u can talk to people using the stereo, and also use steering wheel controls to operate your bluetooth phone.

all in all, it is probably the best hsv i have ever driven, it didnt feel as raw and as toey as the VZ LS2 (which is also probably due to the extra weight) ... but more a refined, well built machine. (i love the interior!)

Awesome.....
