View Full Version : How do you tell if a car has been cammed ?

I test drove a ute tonight (SS A4 VU 50th anniversary model) with stock gearing, stock intake and also seemed to have stock shift firmness.... the only mod it had was a full 3 inch exhaust, cats and extractors.

The owner (2nd) beleived it had been cammed... and whilst it seemed to go a fair bit harder than a normall 'zorsted ls1... it idled at 650 rpm in park and was averaging 15L/100... the car didn't rock at all or have any other symptoms of a cam. Could it have a baby cam ? or do they idle higher ?

Also it was using 2.5L/hr at idle... which would also be bloody low for a cam ?

From what you describe I would say that the car has a stock cam or a very small aftermarket one.

my clubby was doing about 2.8L/Hr Stock (3.3 in Drive) ... so couldn't really see how a cammed up car could be lower ?

Don't forget 50th anniversary came out with a 250kw motor, unsure what the differences between it and the 225 were, someone else may know.

Oh no here we go again, the dreaded 250kw rumour about the 50th anniversary VU SS ute. Seems a lot of people think this is true.

so this was not the case only a rumour, was always under that belief. just spoke to the ex's old boy and he bought it for the reason of having more than the standard otherwise he would have only bought the standard SS.

can anyone verify this?

Its most likely bullshit. Any tuner would be able to verify this by downloading the tune.
