right before you all take the piss outta me accent im from liverpool (uk) and have not much knowledge of your 4 wheeled toys you have so im here to learn, im looking at purchasing an 04 plate monaro over here and was wondering what the reliability is like engine wise on them. im looking at the 5.7 not the 6.0l. And what to look for apart from the usual knocks wines and rattles assocoiated with a few thousand miles abuse?
any advice gratefully recieved, would buy ya a beer but its a bit far to walk

Same model as mine - good choice:yup:
The 2004 model (or series 3) was basically the last of the "old style" production run. By this time, Holden had ironed out most of the bugs - so there shouldn't be too many issues. However look out for ;
- Power steering leaks. With spirited use (ie track days etc) they can overheat & an additional cooler is then necessay. Might not be an issue in your cooler climate.
- Door lock actuators can play up (ie the door lock button fails to retract when locking the car with the remote & the horn will beep a couple of times). Easily fixed by dealer.
- Check the under engine area for oil leaks, around the rear of motor & bellhousing. They can be prone to oil leak from (rear mail seal - $$$), or simply sump gasket and sometimes oil leak from the rocker cover (running down the block & collecting at the rear underside of motor).
Are you looking at an auto - or manual ?

bloody hell so its not just the vauxhall brand that has these problems lol
not many of our vauxhalls have oil tight rockers or sumps.
but yes it will be a manual, not old enuff to need an auto quite yet.
was lookin at a 99 model clubsport but not too sure and if i get the monaro at least it isnt classed as an import like the commy would be.
cheers pete you have eased my fears a bit, now to sell the turbo qwik and find me some monaro beast

SIII also had the LS6 block - end of LS1-oilchew-itis. If the diff whines, it may need a change. If the gearbox whines, it may need some oil. Check the carpets in the footwells for dampness - may indicate some sealant missing from the front guard area of the floorpan (easy fix). SIIIs got improved doorseals and finish to cope with US conditions as it was the first year GTO, along with a strengthened rear shell but still has a whole boot, so arguably the best year unless you like scoops.

The LS1 engine itself is generally very reliable.

Love the car - that's why I bought one. Have had mine since 8k (ex demo) and have had no issues with it at all, except the central locking which plays up (doesn't unlock the passenger-side door) but will be getting this fixed on next service under warranty.
Should be a good buy I think, except for the traffic you guys get over there......terrible!

Our '04 CV8-R has had problems with water leaks, been to the dealer 3 times now,....fills up the rear drivers side footwell ( and we're in a drought !! ).
The '03 series 111 CV8, tho has had no such problems,....tho from time to time there seems to be a lot of smoke billowing from the rear end ????

That is a bit of a worry, I thought they fixed this. I probably wont ever know, the wettest my CV8-R gets is when I am washing it. :nyuk:
I must ask though if a Monaro had this problem would it show up when you wash the car or only when the car is sitting in or driving in the rain?
