OK, I'm new here so hope this is in the right section...

Some background; I use a Merc Vito van for my business, and share a FC RX7 Turbo road/track toy.
Due to changed circumstances (Ex kept the XR6!) I now need a 4 seater so I can take my daughters out.

Top of the list was an RX8 but the test drive was disappointing. For the intended use I can’t be bothered with a car that performs best between 6000 and 9000rpm. Want something ‘lazier’.
So, now I’ve arrived at HSV land, seems that for similar money I can get a Z series Clubsport R8 or a Z CV8. No mystery which is the better car, but I wonder about residual values, will the Monaro hold better as it is the last one (ATM)? Any thoughts?

Next: What Monaro is similar spec to the R8? ie LS2, big brakes etc?
I have been looking at the specs on Redbook but I’m a bit lost now. Does the HSV GTO have this spec?

Any advice appreciated.

Tim

If you go Z series GTO, you will get the 6 litre 297kw engine ,same as R8 of same year......Cheers John

Mate- No four door can match the style and head turning capacity that the Monaro,s and GTO,s have, so for me there isnt even a choice.
There are some very good deals around at the moment for 6 litre GTO,s but the CV8Z is still a great car.
I recently traded my CV8Z for a GTO LE mainly, to get the 6 litre engine but I am equally impressed with both cars.
Go the coupe and you will never regret it.
Happy Cruizin.

I'm biased towards a 2 door ANYTHING, beautiful lines on the Monaro, BUT...you will find it a pain to get your daughters in and out of the 2 door.
Plenty of room, leg wise for an adult, but getting in and out !!!:(
good luck with the choice.

Between the Z Series GTO and the Z Series R8 it is a feature trade off, The GTO has 330mm two piston brakes and the R8 has 343mm four piston brakes. The R8 has eight way electric seats and the GTO has eight way electric seats with memory keys. both have leather, R8 has climate control GTO has dual zone climate control. both have great stereos both have the same drive train, as mentioned earlier GTO has a tiny boot and the GTO looks like it is going fast when it's standing still. GTO will cost you at least 11-12k more than the ZR8 at the moment.

I think GTO will have better resale as a percentage but no one has a crystal ball now do they... If your interested we have a unwanted prize GTO Black Man for sale in used cars with no kilometers on it. (we bought it back from the winner before it drove away new, cost you less than new of course)

The other consideration is coupe is based on Calais interior, sedan is Berlina. So the coupe has fruit the sedan won't. Yes the Monaro is harder to get into but once there it's a good place to be.

Resale - marginally in favour of the coupe. 5-year old Monaros still worth about 60% of new price. Not so sure about GTOs, but given lower numbers should be at least as good as HSV 4-doors.

Yer the Senators are based on the Calais in 4 door, you could probably pick up one for a good price as well...

Yeah but neither the SS or SSV have the LS2 engine or the 4 spot brakes. I would guess that 2 years later the HSVZR8 would be worth more than a standard VE SS or SSV...

And that sort of raises another question: I want a manual clubsport or Monaro, WTF is going on with all the Auto's?? Why but a performance car with a slushbox? I asked on Pistonheads HSV forum and was told all the Monaros sold in England are Manuals. Guys; CLUBSPORT is supposed to mean 'suitable for club level motorsport' not 'suitable for driving to the footy club'... :soap:

I am a manual man myself but you are aware a lot of people on here are into drag racing their cars? The Auto's quicker.

:weirdo: Only in the wrong hands will a standard Auto be quicker than an M6.
Show me one car Holden/HSV has ever released where the Auto has been consistently quicker than the Manual.
Add the fact that a manual will return better fuel economy. And that they are bags more fun to drive over even the smartest auto.

No offence to the 1/4 mile guys but I took my Wanneroo race car to Ravenswood many years ago, Felt like I started a race ( with only 1 other car instead of 30) and stopped before the first corner...

This sounds like most of your question, from a recent thread....

Yep, the R8 is VE, but you'll get a fair idea of what everyone will tell you to spend "your" money on.

I bought my Manual Senator and the misses doesn't drive it. If she wants to she can learn but not in my cars.
