The Honda CR 250 two strokes are good or the CR-F 250 4 strokes are also good i have own 3 new CR 250 and all were good bikes, it comes down to which you likle the most, my last dirt bike was Yamaha WR 450 F now that thing was crazy on the dirt,

I used to have a KTM300 EXC and man that thing was a weapon, had good low down torque to fight its way up long snotty climbs and also the big bore power hit up top, awesome all rounder, the 250 is more highly strung and a bit harder to ride :yup:

If you plan on doing long trail rides bank on about 80-100k's to a tank though, the fun comes at a cost :)

i think it really boils down to WHICH COLOUR YOU LIKE as there all basically very simalar from factory. eg i ride a RM 250 cos i like the yellow ones and my step son rides a KX 80 cos he likes geen , both bikes are awsome to ride.

yamaha yz250's are cheap atm if you can grab one of the lasts ones, not making any more.

everything will be 4 stroke eventually. to get the same power in a 4 stroke need at least a yz400F, and they are a lot more $$$. so the 2 stroke 250 is a bargin for the power.

Hi just wondering did you ever ride a 450EXC KTM?
Just wondering the difference between the two.

What kind of riding do you plan on doing?
Don't look past the 4 strokes as in many types of riding situations you will find they are easier to live with and perform better.

Depends what your main type of riding is, if you are into serious trail riding go the four stroke, theres no messing around with premix fuels and you will get far more than 100k's to a tank, they also have an electric leg (starter) which is a blessing :yup:

In regards to performance you will be surprised by the current crop of four strokes, they go very well and have quite a solid mid range hit and rev hard but I am a stickler for the oil burners, a two stroke is generally easier and cheaper to maintain and is usually quite a few kilo's lighter.

I did the Bright to Dargo ride a couple of years ago and rode a 450EXC for a while and it is a damn good bike, all the KTM's are pretty much the same bar the engine so jumping from one to another feels the same apart from power delivery, for outright power the 300EXC wins but for the most torque where you ride the most the 450EXC wins, I also found the 450EXC harder to drown in seat high river crossings, the 300EXC has a huge airbox that just loves drowning the engine, 80% of crossings the 300EXC was upside down pumping the water out of its lungs

Also on the ride was an ex Alice to Finke KTM550EXC two stroker and a KTM520EXC four stroke, if you want the scenery to blur at every crack of the throttle these are your bikes for you, the 550EXC was the most violent bike I have ever ridden, open the throttle on a fire trail at over 100kmh is greeted with instant wheelspin and will throw boulders at your riding buddies, if it finds grip it will pull monster power wheelies, not forgetting the vibration which is bad enough to make your nuts go numb with pins and needles

So in closing both the 300EXC and 450EXC are very similar and it really comes down to whether you like 2 or 4 stroke, for outright convenience the 4 stroke wins hands down, but at the end of the day momentum is still your friend ;)

Thanks for the response.
Yeah I think you summed up my thoughts.
Low maintenance, Electric start (useful half way a big hill!), and more range.
As it is going to be used for Enduro work , the 450 or even a 525 sounds just right.

I spent a couple of days solid on a ktm200exc. Nice fun bike, very flickable but I was just too big for it, and it didn't have enough up top for me. I am sure the 300 solves the power problems though. Although sacrifices fuel economy no doubt. The KTM build qulaity is just excellent in my view.

I trailride my '06 Honda CRF250R and it is awesome. I find it a much better trail weapon than my old '06 KTM 525 EXC.

Go a 250f..........
