Quick test: Camry Altise
Welcome to a big side-step
by Julian Edgar

-It’s hard to see how in any area this is a class-leading car.

-If the engine is running you’ll also see how much it rocks around; despite the fitment of twin balance shafts, this is never a particularly smooth engine – and is much rougher than the V6 opposition available for the same money.

-The five speed auto trans is new but doesn’t offer tiptronic-style up/down driver control – instead there’s just a ‘wobbly gate’ selector.

-On the road the Camry always feels ‘four cylinder’, rather than smooth and effortless.

-The engine also feels a bit ‘cammy’ for the application – it gets going at about 3500 rpm but spends 95 per cent of its time at much lower revs.

-In as-tested auto trans trim it’s stickered at AUD$29,500. That price gives you only two airbags, steel rims and lacks electric seat height adjust and traction control.

-Drive it and the Altise is a $26,000 car, tops. Why? Well, in addition to the uninspiring engine, the cabin has some silly design glitches. The speed-alert (complete with tiny digital display buried in the top of the dash) is an obvious afterthought, while the lighting of the centre dash controls is massively bright at night – it’s a bit like having a camping fluoro in the middle of the dash. Even simple things like handbrake position (it’s on the left-hand – wrong – side of the console) show cost-cutting. The silver finish of the top of the centre console looks as if it will scratch easily and is sure to be dated styling in a few years’ time.

-In urban driving biased largely towards freeways, we achieved a fuel economy of 9.3 litres/100 km. The ADR 81/01 test figure is 9.9 litres/100 km.

-With the fresh new looks and strong “the car that reads the road” advertising campaign, we were expecting big things of the Camry. Instead we found what’s certainly not a bad car but equally nothing groundbreaking in any way.

-In terms of interior packaging, equipment level, driving dynamics, performance and fuel economy, the Camry doesn’t raise the bar.

-Perhaps it’s simplest to say it’s the car for people who don’t care much about cars...

I took one for a strap 2 weeks ago as a friend had one as a hire car.

The worst thing about the auto is that if you shift manually near redline it takes a good 4 seconds to change - it just kind of slurs between gears and sounds very sick doing it. It is cal;ibrated to be that sloppy you dont even feel the shift. You would expect a shift that high in the rev range to be pretty quick. This car had 6000km on it.

The other thing i noticed in my brief drive was the flimsy cabin plastics, the interior door handles are easy to flex and twist - i can see them snapping off after a while.

The size of the boot is good though.

Hasn't a Camry always been functional transport for non-car people??

Exactly. D'ya really reckon any Camry drivers are on here? Most of them wouldn't even know this forum exists.

The thing is that monaroCountry1's sole purpose in life is to post bad reviews here about Toyota Aurion and/or Camry. Is there really any point in preaching to the choir?

Jesus even my mrs's 99 Camry V6 has a nicer interior than the new one.

So do I have your blessing to spread the word?

Its called evening up the negative and positive reviews. Typically Holden/Ford and Mitsu gets bagged for every little stuff by the mags (Drive). These mags have not been critical of Toyota, they use factory fuel consumption and take toyotas words and PR as gospel..................normally not bothering to review the car in detail (unlike the other 3).

To be honest, your consistent attacks on Toyota are becoming a tad repetetive and boring.

Some people here will never buy a Toyota and don't really care. Personally, I won't rule it out, regardless of your opinion. Either way, posting this stuff here is pretty pointless.

Here? There aren't many Toyota reviews posted here. This is a Holden forum after all. You should go and post this stuff on Drive, where it belongs.

Don't forget me Clixanup. I bag Toyota when ever the opportunity arrises. I don't find it boring at all.

I notice you always stick up for them (Toyota) on here though...why when as you said there are no camry drivers on here. Unless you have a camry poster stuck on your wall somewhere.

I had a close look at the new Camry at the Sydney Motor Show in early October and left .................. totally underwhelmed !

What an over-rated boring piece of tin

The interior plastics looked cheap and easily scratched, the whole presentation very plain and boring, nothing new here, seen it all before.

This car does not deserve the attention or sales it gets, there is much more appealing and exciting product on the market than this.

Toyota bum and blow each time they bring out a new Camry that they have shed their staid old image, but as far as I'm concerned, it's more of the same, I even felt like putting on a cardigan sitting in the thing

No, but my previous car was an AE92 Corolla. It was more reliable and took more punishment than any of the 5 Holdens (and 1 Ford) I'd owned before it.

Camry is like a "breed" of car. They pander to the majority.

As for losing their nan and pop image all i can is "the things change the more they stay the same"

Post this stuff on drive

I don't mind the Toyota bagging - keep it up. This is a Holden forum after all, full of people who don't much care for the products of Holden's competitors :)

Personally, I dislike Toyota's products because they are boring, but I really dislike the Toyota corporate attitude. Just the way they bring out a new product and talk about how it's going to obliterate everything else in the segment and go on with the marketing hype about how an average car is really a world beater really annoys me - especially as they've done it three times now in the large car segment.

Can't wait to see the first month sales figures for the Camry Aurion.

I totally agree with you. I am sick to death of the Aurion ads which make claims such as "F1 inspired" or "The new direction of the large Aussie 6" etc etc. What a crock of shit. I do my best to ignore them by immediately changing the channel/station or turning over the page.

Apart from the Ford v8 and turbo................what other large, RWD, sporty and affordable car are there in the market? Most high performance holden and ford variants are actually used for fun/racing by its owners i.e. drags.

I used to be part of the TRD clan and I was completely disgusted and disillusioned at their attempts at the current performance market. The other thing that really gives the sh*ts is how their marketing crew just blatantly lie just to sell cars :cussing:

Exactly. Toyota use to produce some good cars in the eighties and nineties but have now lost the plot. The early Sprinters, Celicas and Supras are all good cars. I still love the shape of the MkIV Supras.

Now they just build boring.

Nope does not cut me at all.
The Aurion can win as many awards as it wants and I still wouldn't want one.

I would start to take Toyota seriously when they start producing some iteresting performance cars.

But they remain beige as a cardigan.

I drove one of these recently on country roads and can vouch for the ridiculously bright display in centre dash. It is so bright at night that I cannot believe Toyota would release it like this. It is that bad that it could be considered a safety hazard. The gear selector is clumsy and I couldn't understand why the gate was set up that way. Ride and handling were really quite good, though.
