Like the title says which is the best route to get to the Gold Coast from Melbourne?

Am I better to take the Hume to Sydney and then take the coast road to Gold Coast or go through the NSW bush to get to the Gold Coast.

The route with less coppers and radar would be good also, looking at leaving on Xmas day in the morning.

Thanks

I travel out western QLD and western & central NSW - the Newell is not all that bad anymore from Dubbo northwards.

You could cut across to the New England at Coonabarabran, and go to the coast through northern NSW - scenic drive if you wanted to look at something apart from red dirt & wheat fields ;)

Cheers

Are these the only prerequisites?

Would you prefer the fastest route or the leisurely one?

Go through the country mate. I travel from GC to Dubbo a bit to see the family and its a good run. Pacific highway is littered with speed cameras and will be chockas full of the holiday makers. Make sure you have a camp aswell mate, its a friggin long trip! Good motels in Dubbo, the Abel Tasman is a great stay and fairly priced. Its just as you come into Dubbo from Melbourne, past the Golf Course.

Have a safe trip!

Sounds like the inland route is the best way to go, what about coppers, radar and arial rader (choppers/planes)?

Leave Melbourne and head through the following towns:

Shepparton
Tocumwal
West Wyalong
Dubbo
Coonabarabran
Narrabri
Moree
Goondawindi
Warwick
Beaudesert

Beware of local speed limits in NSW towns *50km/h*, you will find it ever so hard to slow to this what seems to be, crawling speed after cruising at 110km/h+.

Last time I made this trip I was cruising at 110km/h, started to approach Coonabarabran, speed limit dropped to 50km/h. I casually switched cruise control off and coasted into the town gradually slowing down. Slowing through approximately 65km/h a car passed the other way...NSW hwy patrol of course, did a U turn and busted me, explained to me how I needed to be find as there were "drunk and aboriginals walking the streets that I were putting in danger" Funny thing was - it was 12:30am, our car and the police car were the only souls in sight, no other cars or pedestrians whatsoever!

Avoid the coastal highway if at all possible - at this time of year it will be chock a block with slow vehicles towing trailers, boats, caravans etc.

Wouldn't worry about choppers/planes, unless NSW HP have enlisted a few cropdusters to gas speeders....

Be careful around Warick (Cunningham HWY), as the HP there usually have 1 lead car, which you slow down for, then trailing a few k's is another car with radar, which will get you if you speed back up after passing the lead car.

Go the inland route for sure.

Adam

I'm pleased to see this thread got back on track after swingtan and ssgirl's attempt to pervert it but, from my experience the route Holden Nut suggested is a good one.:yahoo:

Yep saw this in operation a few weeks ago, coming back from Stanthorpe, passed the lead marked car with radar, car in front, sped back up to his previous cruising speed of about 115 km/h, and within two minutes came across the unmarked station wagon with radar......with my mate at the side of the road.

This was around Maryvale I think, Cunningham, Warwick side of the Gap.

We were on our way back from a traffic court matter in Stanthorpe, so cruising right on the limit.

But I concur, Brisbane/Gold Coast to Melbourne, quickest and easiest route is via the Newell, and a decision needs to be taken where to head East. Come all the way to Ipswich, and you end up on the Logan Motorway which is a toll road and we fleece you $2.80 for the privilege of driving on it. But your E-tag will work up here too.

Looks like I have a delivery to make in Lismore on the way up. Still best to go to Goondiwindi first and then take the Bruxner HWY through Tenterfield to Lismore, then up the coast road.

Thanks for all your help on this guys. I'm originally from QLD and know my way around the state quite well, but now I live in Melbourne and have never driven in NSW :D

at least this way you will avoid the Warwick HWP district. Also Tenterfield HWP very rarely patrol the Bruxner Hwy - 95% of their time is on the New England and the other 5% on the Bruxner east of Tenterfield. The Bruxner Hwy west of Tenterfield is pretty much open slather with the HWP on it rarely

Plus the drive from Tenterfield to Drake is fun - unless you have carsick passengers that is

.

EDIT: actually being holiday time there could well be some 'activity' between Tenterfield and Glenlyon Dam on the Bruxner Hwy west of Tenterfield
