Bit of a weird problem happened yesterday, my wife was driving the calais home when it stuttered as she exited a round a bout then about five hundred meters down the road the car came to a complete standstill. This wasn't a gradual stop it was as if the brakes were hit hard, so hard infact Theresa headbutted the steering wheel. I went out to have a look at it myself and sure enough as soon as drive was engauged the brakes locked and stopped the car from moving forward, hit the accelerator and the motor revs freely for about 5 seconds and then the car will slightly move forward. put it in reverse and everythings normal.

Ofcourse Holdens have never seen this before so I guess we'll wait and see the outcome, my guess would be something to do with the ABS considering the brakes came on by themselves :werd:

interesting one. let us know what it was, if they manage to find it.

That's pretty damn scary. Maybe brake assist or ESP developing a mind of its own......

I hope the Dealer has given you a FREE loaner until the car is fixed. That's really scary stuff.

it's amazing what 3.2 million km's of testing doesn't pick up :(

most VE faults reported so far have been fairly minor, but annoying issues, but this one takes the cake !

Thats one of the scariest faults in a car I have ever heard of !!!!!

Please do keep us informed.

Christ!
thats a major worry.
Bit like some of the early Falcons with ABS (first series of the falcon/fairlane/ltd range to have ABS fitted) had some fault that under certain conditions the brakes would work fine until it decelerated to around 20km/h or so, then it would lose hydraulic pressure completely and just ram into whatever was in front of it. Apparently it was some bug in the coding.

So could be something similar in a way.

I knew they shouldnt have used SkyNet for ESP software

not a good situation to be in, would rather the car stopping itself rather than old mate on the gateway that kept accelerating.

interesting that the more technology put into cars to make them safer you get random software conflicts like this.

well just got back from the dealer and as far as no drive forward goes "the trans is broken and we have ordered a brand new one" is what the service manager said. I asked about the sudden stopping and he said that there was a lot of error codes in the computer and it could have been that all the codes at once caused a problem.....in other words they dont know.

As far as the dealer goes they cannot be any more helpful, free drinks, free new loan car for as long as it takes to fix and are always keeping me up to date

Shame to hear but good it can be fixed. I know all about this with the brand new Vectra we have needing a new auto trannie 6000km in.

It will cost Holden a packet to replace yours. The Vectra's auto was around $7500 including labour etc but thank god for warranty.

Could this sudden stop of the car have occurred at higher speeds.....now that would scare the crap out of me

Maybe Holden spending a billion dollars wasn't quite enough...

yep thats scary, i really hate the technology that goes into cars today. What happened to 4 wheels 2 seats 2 doors a big engine, real wheel drive and 4 breaks..... as thats all i really want in a car.. the rest is rubbish....

All this technology going into these new cars but we're having to replace the auto and diffs way too early.... Maybe some money should be spent to get these parts safe and reliable...

None of this stuff costs Holden anything. All warranty claims are covered by Holdens incurance company. In other words... they're insured for any manufacturing faults found in the car during the warranty period.

Bugger .... I hope it's a manufacturing fault and not a parts breakage.

Glad to hear your wife is ok. This happening on a freeway with cars moving fast behind you would cause a major accident, I hope it was a one off and doesn't become a common fault.

Same thing happened in the carpark at work to a BF falcon. in N you could push the car and move it, in any gear inc reverse the brakes were locked on. Tilt tray came and removed it.

That's what they get (both Holden and Ford) for going for the cheapest supplier. The supplier would invariably cut corners so as to get the supply contract.

I agree, core components such as these shouldn't even have to raise an eyebrow. I feel the time has come and gone for holden to ever improve these components, for me anyway.

I wonder how much that kind of insurance would cost them. Not free, that's for sure!

they were told not to open the box, it had to be returned to Melbourne to be inspected by "Holden Technical". I guess we will never know
