Yesterday in the daily telegraph, they had an article about the VE in Europe, if it will sell in high numbers, as holden do not have a diesel version as yet. The article went to say that holden are looking at diesel engines from BMW. It went on to say prototypes of the camaro will be testing on victoria roads later this month. So all you LS1 members down there have digital camera's charged and in glove box for the first pics, good hunting.

I know I flog the BMW-is-good thing a bit repetitively, but in Europe their 2.5L 6cyl diesel was highly respected - the amazing thing is, it was a diesel-ized version of the old 3-series 2.5L 6 cyl petrol engine! Same bore & stroke, head slightly changed so that diesel injectors went in instead of petrol, and the first of the modern lightweight diesels.
Then, the brought out the 4.0L turbo V8 diesels, and if you think the 2.5d went well in the 5 and 7 series, the 4.0L re-wrote the book - even in Germany, its a rare car in a 7 series and the motor press loved it.
Holden wouldn't go wrong with a BMW diesel - it was the only thing in Land Rovers that didn't leak/breakdown.

Holden is supposed to be using a VM Motori diesel - supposedly one of the most respected makers of high-tech diesel motors. How's a 3.0 litre TDI V6 with more torque than a LS2 sound?

I've come from a strong LPG conversion background, but I'm a diesel fan - a diesel Crewman will kill Japanese 2WD dual cab sales overnight, a diesel Commodore wagon will capture the country rep market easily, and a diesel VE sedan and diesel Statesman will dominate the taxi & hire car markets.
I hope they have addressed the noise issues with the VM units - they are a good unit.

Do Holden really want that?

Would an inline 6 fit inside the engine bay?

Yee gods man, you'll be in trouble for even suggesing such a thing around here.
Having spent a month in Europe, I'm now a BIG fan of diesels, and have happily joined the "hurry up Holden, introduce a diesel VE" bandwagon. :)
It's a pity diesel is MORE expensive than ULP here in Australia, when in several other parts of the world it's a fair bit cheaper.
Cheers,

Personally I think no diesel will dominate the taxi market as long as diesel sells at or over 3 times the price of LPG...

I laughed at my uncle for buying a Ssangyong Musso when the first came out here. Until i found out that they were Mercedes powered also the gearbox as well, it hasnt missed a beat since. Its a 96 ( i think) and not 1 problem with it.
The price you see em going for it wouldnt make a bad tow car.

When the maxicab drivers get 40% more range than the LPG maxis, and the MB CDI Silver Service E-Classes get 1000kms to a tank, the lowering of the price can only be a bonus - if you've watched the price of LPG & petrol lately you will have seen them fluctuating wildly while diesel has stayed constant even 500kms west of Brisbane. From Brisbane to Roma, the difference in the bowser price of diesel was 2c while petrol was 12c dearer in Roma.

LPG is shortly to have excise added to it in Oz - which won't double it in price or anything, but will swing the margins closer to diesel. At the moment the extra cost of a diesel over the petrol is a disincentive - as more diesels hit the road that will fall.
Europe and Scandinavia are both expected to be 100% self-sufficient in bio-diesel within ten years. In fact I beleive the whole British canola crop (bloody stuff is everywhere you go) is dedicated to diesel from next year.

Selling cars pays for future development - I reckon they'd be happy with any sales they could get.

The real question is: Do the enthusiasts really want that?
