I've been looking around to trade in my VT Calais and it's a choice between these two cars.
The VE Calais has sports suspension, more interior room, better exterior color range, better stereo (9 speakers compared to 6), boot opens better (no goose necks) and IMO looks better externally.
The Presara comes with all the fruits - metallic paint, sunroof, sat nav, full leather, six speed auto, Telematics system, two driver's seat memory, front sonars, reversing camera, auto level adaptive HID headlamps, headlamp washers, full electrics for front seats, smart entry, start/stop button, auto dipping exterior mirrors, electrochromatic rear view mirror, rain sensing wipers, rear power sunshade and full size spare alloy.
The changeover price for the Presara is $3K more than the Calais.

At the end of the day your stuck with all the other cheap bad handling fleet camrys on the road.

You will regret buying another toyocrap but hey its your money.

I guess theres always a fool that believes toyotas hype and pr (not that your a fool).

Forgot to mention my mrs and her old man took a mid range Aurion for a test drive.
My mrs told me its a nice car to drive and has a fair bit of go but the engine pushed hard sounds like a straining electric motor about to crap itself compared to the more grunty sound of the 3.6L Alloytec.

Aurion is an understeer machine according to Wheels. Love ploughing towards gutters? Buy Aurion.

obviously on a holden fan sight everyone will recommend the holden...

The calais is probably better value but the toyota has the smoother more refined motor. Depends on what you want mate.

A smooth front wheel drive no fuss drive?

or an aggressive rear wheel drive european inspired aussie/american tank?

I'd look at it like this: if you enjoy driving, then get the Calais. Easy done.

If you're not really into driving, and cars are more of an 'A to B appliance' thing for you than something to cherish and enjoy, then the Aurion is worth a look. It's well made and reasonably spacious inside as long as you don't have long legs, comes with lots of gear and has good straight-line performance. Slow down for the corners (or just don't go that fast in the first place) and I'm sure it will be fine.

One other point to consider will be future resale. The Calais has been the top SWB Holden now for more than 20 years and it is well known in the marketplace as being the top of the range car. Nobody knows what a Presara is or where it fits into the lineup, and this might hurt come resale time when the market views it as 'just another Camry'.

What a stupid question for a holden forum!

Do you want a large car ie Calais or a medium car ie Camry (sorry Aurion)

Before looking at toyota you should check out what ford has to offer aswell.

People who enjoy a drivers car wouldn't buy the camry, my mrs liked the aurion until i took her see the VE SSV/calais V. We ordered the VE SSV that after noon (due in march). Cant possibly compare these two cars. If toymota put a Lexus V8 and a diff i  been interested!!

the Aurion could have fought for some RWD marketshare by building it on the Lexus LS430 RWD chassis
with the following engines
4L V6 from the Hilux/Prado
5.7L V8 from the Tundra
and 4.4L TTV8 diesel from the Tundra/Landcruiser

but would it have made it a better selling car?

Pilbara SSV
28-12-2006, 04:25 PM
Maybe not! But at least it would keep the local big 2 honest and we might get boot lid carpet included with our SSV's hey!:yup:
I would still buy the holden but it would definitely swing some buyers because of the fact it would get rid of the "go to lawn bowls and back image"
Maybe!!

Would have made the Aurion more expensive as well.

Would it have made it sell better? Maybe to us who know about cars, but to 98% of the market who know nothing, dont think it makes a difference.

Quark's guide to selecting a Commodore or Aurion.

You will be happier with an Aurion if you truthfully answer "yes" to three or more of the following:
You wear a cardigan.
Your jumpers have leather patches on the elbows.
You are an engineer.
You are teetotal (well at least since you finished your engineering degree).
You believe speed limits are determined in some rational and scientific way.
You've never had a speeding ticket (don't worry about the dozen or so tickets for going through red lights - they don't count).
You have a combover.
You wear, or have considered wearing, a wig to cover your bald spot.
You smoke a pipe (wacky tobaccy doesn't count).
You really want a Saab or Volvo.
You wear pajamas.
You do "it" in the dark.

Bonus 3 points if you answer yes to any of the following (and you should only drive a Camry, as the power of six throbbing cylinders could send you insane):
You wear more than one cardigan.
You play lawn bowls.
You drive under the speed limit when there is a single lane, but speed up whenever there is an overtaking lane, as being overtaken is an affront to your manhood.
You keep your pajamas on when you do "it" in the dark.

You are an engineer.

Quark what are you on about?

I know plenty of engineers and work with engineers. Most of them absolutely hate Toyota and the Camry. All engineers are renowned for their vast consumption of BEER, and most of all they drive manly cars like FALCONS and COMMODORES.

Camry drivers are the hippies, accountants, boring senior citizens and environmentalists of society.

It must be the industry I work in - nearly all of the engineers are the most conservative bunch you could imagine (and a lot own/lease camrys or the odd peugot). Whereas the accountants have a fair share of petrol heads.

Yes, when I was at uni the engineering students set the standard for beer drinking, but at some point in time they became teetotal - perhaps it was part of their parole conditions after some of the uni stunts ;-).

Most of the tree huggers I work with have smokey old magnas or like (love the irony).

Environmental engineers and council workers.......most likely.

Chemical, electrical, civil and mechanical definately not. Have a look at the telco fleet mobiles. Usually ford wagons and holden sedans.

Next year she might be replacing her camry for a Astra cdti which we both think its a cracker of a car. :)

No offence to gay people.

Good to see a environmental engineer with his head screwed on right.

Since I am not an environmental engineer I do my bit for the enviroment and I even know there is tons of oil left even before the bullshit warnings going on.

Only thing worry's me is the water levels even though I have an underground water tank.

Hopefully the weather patterns we are going through at the moment is just a phase in aussie climate. If the big dry stays, then you can say goodbye to most farming! Australia is bascially a desert at the moment!

From msn today:

"Satellite mapping of Australia's fresh water supplies shows the continent has lost the equivalent of 92 Sydney Harbours in fresh water in the past three years.

The global mapping project, using US and German satellites, found Australia suffered a net loss of 46 cubic kilometres of fresh water since 2002, Fairfax newspapers report.

The lost water could have quenched Sydney's thirst for more than 80 years, based on consumption patterns."

Desalination plant powered by a Nuclear Reactor, problem solved, sort of :)
