Candy Paint jobs arent as pricey as they used to be, but still have a resonable cost involved due to base coats and finishes etc etc

Ring around ya local spray painters for pricing... shoudl give u a rough idea.....

I know when we went to paint the escort in candy apple green, it was going to cost about 3500 for the paint job, excluding any panel work... (not that it needed any)

So we went with an evil blue...

A whole car respray inc everything in Candy Apple Red will set you back anywhere between $8000-$10,000 Depending on how much work is needed on the car & if its a bare metal job or not.

My father had an XT GT (back in the day) in this colour and someone vandalised it. When he realised how much it was going to cost to re-paint all damaged panels, he sold it because he couldn't find the money at the time. I was so upset (I was 7 years old at the time) because he had promised me that it would be mine when I was old enough to drive :(

SS :)

It IS an awesome colour.

per litre same price as most 2k's, basically you paint the car either silver or gold metallic depending on what shade you want after. Then you hit it with what is essentially clear with dye in it. The cost is there becuase unlike usual paint if you go over any panel more than the other the paint will actually be darker on that panel.

Even a stroke of the gun run over the same spot can cause it to look patchy. Best left to the pro's, I have painted stuff in it bit small things without areas big enough to show my stuff ups.

sting red/red hot is my fav red, which is why my clubby and XB coupe both in the colour, but candy is an effect its not the color that makes it stand out its the fact that you can see deep into the paint like glass.

From what I've been told in the past candy paints generally fade quicker, not sure if that's still the case with good waxes and clear coats etc etc.

that was in the old days when they used printing ink in clear, these days its way more durable

Its house of Kolours paint, old boy has it on his softail (harley) make sure you put a good thick undercoat on. he used a 2 pack green and BY GOD if you look after it. it's a amazing paint color. and can withstand a fair knock he was involved in a accident resulting in him dropping the bike onto bitumen
only thing was a tiny chip (2mm) of the rear corner...

you'll pay ~ $400 per pint.

HOK not the only ones doing it these days, Deebers is another I have used, but they sell at standard pricing. Its not so much a special paint like flip colors, its the way its applied so it doesn't really cost more per litre unless you go to big American brands.

I think PPG do some candies as well.

Its worth it - a mate of mine resprayed a '65 Impala in C.A.R. and it looked magnificent. Big cars return the best results.

Candy colours are used to tint the colours underneath, as for the price, very expensive, unless its a show car its not worth it. It costs $200-300 for a small portion probably less than half a litre. but you mix them with reducers and so on.

In comparison, what's a normal paint job worth?

I know there's bare metal and other variations, but in general?

my car is red hot (colour), from the info so far, the candy red can just go over the factory paint ? with minor prep work ?

Red candy wont go over red.

This is how candy paint works.

Candy is a dye that is mixed in with clear coat. Starting with a black base coat you would spray the red candy until the car reaches the level of red that you want. If you sprayed 10 coats of candy the car would be bright red, or a single coat it would appear black but with dark red highlights.

For bright fluro colours you'd apply candy over a white basecoat.

Candy is very hard to apply because if you apply too much on some area's then they will have more colour than the rest of the car.

House of Kolor supplies the candy premixed with a clearcoat ready to mix with hardener and reducer. Some other places supply the dye only to mix with your own clear coat.

I looked into getting candy paint on my car but my painter had not used it before so just settled on a dark purple with a shit load of blue and violet pearl.

You cant beat the look of a good candy paint, the lines and edges of the car become much more defined.

so basically, my car would have to be completely sanded down, then repainted with an undercoat of my choice ? or does it have to be black ?

then the candy red is applied on top.

thanks for the info maz ! this is definitly looking like a path i will be taking down the track!

Most candy red cars have a very dark colour base coat and then red candy over the top... Most basecoats are either white or black. Sometimes they may use a dark green or silver. You would not use a white basecoat as the car after the first coat of red candy would become a light baby pink. With additional coats the car would reach a red/pink colour.

You can also mix pearls or flakes in the basecoat as well. Or you can mix the pearls in with the candy... Most pearls need additional clear coats over the top so its easiest to apply the pearl into the basecoat. However if you mix it into the basecoat you need much more pearl mixed in compared to spaying a coat over the top in the candy.

If i was to paint my wagon again i would use a black base coat and then spray a House of Kolor Burple Candy over the top, i'd mix alot of violet Ice Pearl into the candy coat which would give the Burple (bluey purple) colour a more purple look. Then the car would have to have a few clear coats over the top and it would be done.

At night or in shadow the car would appear black unless you really look at the car you will notice its purple. However in sunlight the edges will be clearly be purple with tinge of blue. When you look up close the paint would be glittery with the purple ice flakes.

Heres a pic of my car in sunlight notice the purple/blue pearl changes its colour. http://members.optusnet.com.au/ttwagn/DayPics/12.JPG

Here a pic of my car at night, notice its black on the sides but the highlights are purple.
http://members.optusnet.com.au/ttwagn/AwesomePics/2.JPG

If the car was candy the dark parts would be darker and the highlights would be even brighter purple. So the lines of the car stand out more and just look better in candy.

Big problem is you cant just respray a single panel you have to do the entire side of the car. Its nearly as bad as chamelion paint.

It can be done for alot cheaper. If you know a panelbeater/spraypainter you can drop that price significatly.
I know a pannelbeater that did a colour change on a VL commodore from white to XR6T blue. He did it for $3000.
it wasnt showroom kind of quality. But it still looked bloody briliant.
