I'm looking to get an LS1 powered tow car. I'm not decided on either a sedan or ute, but it all depends on towing capacity.
I've been to 2 dealers asking the question and couldn't get a straight answer.

What is the maximum legal towing capacity of both auto sedan & ute?

cheers

Are you sure that unbraked figure is correct?

The reason I ask is because of the towing figure of my Pathfinder:

Unbraked: 750kg
Braked: 3000kg

(it seems weird that a commodore could tow almost a tonne more unbraked, yet almost a tonne less braked)

my VZ manual says unbraked capacity is only 500kg, but surely bugalugs would have trailer brakes if he was towing something heavy

Common factory tow packs for commodore are 1200kg, 1600kg and 2100kg

My Nissan Patrol was 750kg unbraked and 3500kg braked.

that was the info I got when looking at towbars the otherday for the adventra. It may be the case that 1600kg and 2100kg are both braked. I also was told that the 2100 is a heavy duty assembly whereas the 1600 is a lighter setup. I'll have to look into it a bit more....

I have recently been enquiring about towbars, the 1200kg is a conventional bolt on tongue, the 1600kg is the slip in square box section type and the box section is 40mm wide, where the 2100kg unit is a slip in square box type but it is 50mm wide with some extra supports. This is what I have been told from the dealers and Hayman Reese. I am tossing up whether to go the genuine Holden one or the Hayman Reese, I have been told the Holden ones are not made by Hayman Reese but some other manufacturer.

finally i have found the answer ive been wondering for the last 10 months...why is my square box bigger then the other ones?
cheers for that.

500kg would be totally unbraked
1600kg regular tow bar and over-ride brakes
2100kg with a heavy duty Hayman Reece towbar with electric brakes fitted, and transmission cooler, and you would need the anti-sway bars. at least two axles on the trailer too.

the holden packs add a bit too, depending on model such as heat shields etc

I have a Holden 1600 kg fitted to my SSZ manual ute. The sticker on the towbar and inside drivers door says max towing weight with a braked trailer: 1200kg manual and 1600kg auto however the owners manual states 1600 kg for both manual and auto V8 utility.

Go figure???

yea my sticker on the towbar (now removed) said 2100kg, but in the drivers door it said 1200kg. i think maybe they only made 1 sticker for the door.

For my old VY SS Sedan I think the owners manual stated a maximum towing weight of 1600kg for the M6 and 2100kg for the A4

I think that the 2100 is the rating for the towbar itself and doesn't take into consideration gearbox/clutch capacity etc. as the owners manual and stickers on the vehicle body do!

I assume that the standard manual clutch is the weakest link in the chain for towing purposes

Well then what is the limit on my car when the sticker says 1200kg for a manual yet the book says 1600kg for both manual and automatic?

Holden wouldn't know how to organise a %$#@ in a brothel...

Its usually 1650 for a M6 and 2100 for a A4.

We used to tow our 2000+ chippy trailer with an M6 crewman. Let just say the clutch didnt last long (clutches I should say ). Great once it was going but starting off is not much chop.

Sold that and got a A4 SSZ crewman and it is great. Some diff gears would make it even better.

My Genuine Holden Towbar is rated to 1600kg. Not that I would with a standard clutch. Now that I'm running a Tex Z Grip I wouldn't hesitate to pull that kind of weight.

Trailers weights are 1000kg with no brakes, single or dual axle.
2000kg with brakes on one axle and 3500kg with brakes on both axles and breakaway coupling(applies trailer brakes if trailer comes off)
These are weights loaded.

I'm not sure if advertised towbar weights are downward weight on towbar or towed weight. Does anyone know?

Towed weight. Usually the downward weight is 10% of the towing weight. eg on a 1600 tow kit you will see it has a 160kg down weight

utes have a maximum of 1600kg, so legally it would be borderline depending on hilux and trailer weight. That said, it should pull it ok.

so is there any way that a vz v8 ute can tow 2100kg?
use of any of the following help increase tow capacity?

Heavy Duty Towbar rated to 2100 kg?
electric or hydraulic brakes on trailer/van?
automatic transmission?
heat shield for the centre drive shaft bearing?
WDH (Load Distribution Hitch)?

Proberly not , due to it's floppy axle , it'd be dragin' it's arse .

and they limit the manual too 1600kg , because the take off shudder kills the box , apparently .

Although a mate has a manual Crewie SS with a factory fitted 2500kg ,
tows his 12ft tandem tool trailer with out a problem , has done from new .

Cross 8/6's come standard with the 2500kg tow bar .

there's a few threads on this , just scroll down .
