Hi, any dieslel experts out there?? Im just after some opinions. My mate recently bought a 95 hilux 2.8 diesel with 230,000k on it. During the week he was driving on the freeway @ 100km/h when the thing shot a piston thru the block, resulting in a $750 tow truck fee back to Melbourne!!! He is spewin as u can imagine and having bought it privately hasnt got a leg to stand on in regards to the bloke he bought it off. Just wondering if this is a common thing to happen as i thought Toyotas were generally bullet proof. Also, out of my own curiosity, what causes an engine to do this?
Cheers, Jarrod

Those 2.8 engines are made of Jatz crackers and Kraft cheesesticks...and have massive bottom end problems. Ive put together a tough turbo one in my time and you have to be careful of the mileage...anything over 100,000km they are an oily engine accident waiting to happen :teach:

The 2.8 isn't one of Mr Toyota's better engines from my experience working on them over the years, though I've seen some with 750K- km's untouched. But I've gotta agree with ST about the bottom end as I've also seen a fare few dead one's. Back in the early 90's my employer had 2.8 that seized just out of warranty, they strangely enough took the vehicle back for repairs and he got it back with a new engine. We heard later on through the trade they'd had some die, some minor, others major and then recommended 5K oil changes. When buying a Hilux oiler, check that it has a traceable service record/history otherwise walk away, even then its no garrantee you won't have probs.
Buying another motor won't be a cheap exercise either, maybe cheaper to repower it.

Not always.
I have a 1991 LN106 2.8d 4x4 in my driveway. Had the turbo fitted at 150k in 1999, and she's since added another faultless 150k since then. Just over 300k on the clock, never even had the head off. Runs 11lb boost. Uses no discernable oil and I reckon she'll see the 400k mark before a rebuild.
No rocketship, just a solid, reliable old diesel.
i dont know how many of those filthy shitters ive had to rebuild in my time but its been plenty. youve gotta change the oil at least every 5000ks for the bottom end to have any chance of living a long life. i saw one recently with a rod out the block but they make a hellova racket before they explode. you have to stop when they start knocking!

from my experinces they start to spin the big end bearing and thats when they knock, I guess it is the piston hitting the cylinder head. the one I am doing at the moment only knocks when you lift the revs up, it hasnt thrown a rod yet
I sure wouldnt buy one from a car yard if it had a few kms on it and you couldnt see the service history.

Black have a look at the number of toyotas on the side of the road.
Ive started to question their reliability. IMO people are getting reliability and fit/finish mixed up.

My old man had an 84 twin cab hilux with the 2.4L diesel had done 400,000km before he rebuilt the engine, when he was getting it rebuilt he also found out that one of the pistons was cracked in half, but the thing kept on running.
The only problem was the car was constipated as it couldnt pass a thing. LOL
Top speed was 140km down the biggest hill you ever seen.

Very common to spin number five crank bearing - not the worl'd greatest engine.
I see Suburban Imports had a 4cyl Cummins with a Allison auto that would drop right in :driving:

Too early in the morning...still waking up.
They have a five bearing crank up to a certain engine number, and a four bearing one from then on - forget when the break was.

Now the diesel has gone bang excellent opportunity to slot 308 into that oily engine bay and make it go like it should, or V8 diesel could fit nicely. :karate:

I was reading in a alloy boat magazine what a lightweight engine the Chev 6.5 diesel is - I don't know the dimensions, but I know a Duramax is the same physical size as a 454.

When my trusty hilux gave up the race i dropped a 308 int it and i tell you what with the low diff gears that thing pulls like a bus load of school boys.
I never drove it on the road though its just a pig shootin wagon

I'm constantly on the lookout for roadside breakdowns. I hardly see any cars on the side of the road these days let alone a toyota, are you sure you're not driving past the toyota dealer seeing the cars out front? :lmao:
