Hi guys,

Just got back from Byron - if you haven't been I recommend it. The accomodation is expensive but everything else is reasonable ie food and entertainment etc. The beach is magnificent and the water warm.

I averaged 10.8 with roof racks and boogie boards/umbrellas and about 10 on the way back (better packing ;)

Anyway I got a flat on the way back in Kempsey and had to fit the "space saver" spare. This is the 18" mag painted yellow from the VYII Clubby fitted with a 215/45 R18" non-directional Pirelli Rosso Zero (standard is a 245/35 ZR 19" non-directional as far as I can tell). Now we all know we should drive at only 80kmh, which on a Saturday afternoon with no hope of a repair, would mean a 4~5 hour drive to Sydney.

I have 2 questions.

1) Why HSV, do you supply such crap options? I've been told that the full size won't fit! Crap - how come the wheel fits in the bay? I will try and buy a cheap 19" wheel to suit. Suffer the new VE HSV buyers with 2 wheel sizes! Incidentally it was the damn valve stem that failed - no puncture grrrrr!

2) What is the real speed these can be driven. I know the wheel size is different but the total diametre diff is only millimeters. Is this to save on massive compensation payouts? Why must I drive at 80klms per hour on a tyre that is supplied standard on Fazzas and Lambos?

I think its pretty poor to nickel and dime on such issues. When I bought a VTII SS with 18" Monaro wheels, I got a full size spare so why when you pay over $75,000 do you get a wheel unfit for a freaking Barina? :hmmm: It would cost what, an extra $50? Bastards!

Hi Buddy

I posted a similar thread about two years ago. I was not impressed either. From memory, the 80km speed recommedation is due to diff reasons....not the tyre. You are spinning two different size tyres through the one diff. Apparently...this is not good for prolonged periods or excessive speed.
I have 2 questions.

When it happended to me I drove 5 hours at the speed limit. 2 years on...no dramas.

Yeah Byron is a fun place. Night time turns into a mini-mardi gras (not gay!) with street vendors and buskers kicking in. I didnt want to leave ...

I had to drive the same distance as you Redsled and kept to the limit but I cant understand why the diff ratio would be so different. And if it is, then why not supply either a full size spare with corrrect tyre or use a smaller wheel with a tyre that matches the circumference of the standard rim ferchrissakes !!! My 10 year old was saying how lame and stupid Holden must be. I had to agree with him.

Anyway thanks for the replies. guys

LOL not only does Holden do it but most car companies do. Mates $240,000 BMW M5 has a space saver wheel in the boot :p and even a clients Aston Martin has space saver wheel and that car cost him over $700k ;)

Lets face it, how often do you get a flat :p so thats most likely why they do it not to state obvious that it saves them a bit of $$$ on each car...

Anyways Byrons a great place, was there not too long ago drive from brissy to Byron isn't bad just gotta watch out for the highway patrol grrrrrr..

Can people please stop refering to these as "Space Savers". The correct term is Manufacturer "Cost Saver".
