Considering buying a Ute rebuilt with a 355 stroker. Have not gone to see or hear it yet but wanted an educated opinion on whether it was a good idea to begin with.

It's a catch 22 with such a purchase - often rebuilds are by motor enthusiasts and they spend a great deal of time and effort (and $$$!) getting their beasts just right, drive them hard, but not too hard, then upgrade. Or they are amateurs and things seem ok from the outside to an uneducated person then go on to be a big mess of wrong calibrations and vibrations that never go away.

Any advice on what to look for when test driving or listening to a post production full engine mod? (other than the usual oil check etc)

Just make sure the guy has receipts for all the work done and that it's all been done by workshops with a good reputation i suppose. If he can't produce receipts for parts and labour don't touch it.

Thats probaly the easiest way to avoid buying a dud.

I would myself want to start it from cold to have a listen,

none of this 'I just warmed it up before you got here'
see how the oil pressure comes up cold and then hot.
