View Full Version : Di Filippo Sound Level

Hey guys,
I am looking for a new exhaust system for my VY Monaro, and from the research I have done it appears that a full Di Filippo system is the way to go - headers, cats and twin 2.5" exhaust.
I have one concern though - when discussing this option with retails they told me that the system is not legal - the sound level is (I think) 94db and apparently the max for my car is supposed to be 88db.
Please forgive my ignorance, but I would assume that the system only outputs at 94db when you are really revving the engine, and would remain under the legal 88db through normal driving???
Is there anyone here who can clarify this for me, or anyone who has had any trouble with the law due to this system.
Cheers!

Mate, i've had a full Di-Filippo system running for over a year now, been driving past the coppers (accelarating with engine reving more than normal) and not once been pulled over for the noise issue. I was once actually given a compliment by one of them at a breatholiser boose bus that it sounds pretty good. I guess it also depends if you have a bigger cam installed as well, mines just the standard one... but I'm sure ppl with cams will be able to give you more info..
Cheers... :D

Don't think you will find many aftermarket exhaust systems
that will meet legal noise requirements. You just take the
risk I guess.
Edit: Just read padinas post, and yes, the noise with a cam
increases ten fold. I always slip into neutral when I see the
boys in blue at close proximity.

Biggest complaint I get is they are too quiet.
They have a nice quiet note with no drone , here in WA they are the quietest system on the market.

I doubt any aftermarket exhaust that sounds half decent would pass the db test. Its extremely unlikely that u would get done for excess noise with the DF system u are looking at. And yes cammed cars make a lot more noise, I know all about that!!!

Ive found the full DF exhaust in Kris's VX to be quiet at idle, but sound nice on full noise.
Its a nice system, go for it.

Mate I have a 2 1/2" Di Filippo exhaust cat back I retained my HSV long type headers and cats and I got to say its great no drone and nice sound as for to loud no way it would come anyway near being illegal.
don't let it worry you mate just get the Di Filippo and you will look back and smile.
Cheers

Through a Pacemaker 4-1 1 3/4 Headers into Opened cats and twin 2.5 DF, i got 91Db, as measured to pass an EPA test....
Lucky for me they wrote 90Db on the sheet to allow it to actually pass.
The test is conducted at 3300rpm. I was at 91Db by 2900rpm

mate I got a difillipo system fitted without centre muffler from g&d, cop got me for speeding coming back from loch sport on sunday, he knew it was'nt a standard system, but he liked the noise it made, but I waited until he got back in his car b4 I took off though. 1 day when I learn how to do video clip I will post it up, but yeh not sure how to.

Don't forget fellas (and ladies) that the exhaust note gets louder as the system gets older. A car which is under the noise limit now will be over it in as little as 12 months. As for being defected for the noise, it all really depends on the police that stop you, and what you were doing at the time that you were stopped as to how far they will take the noise issue.

I have the Difilipo twin 2.5" in stainless with opened factory cats and short headers and the thing I don't like about this system is the excessive back off cackle. There is no way mine would pass a noise test though! However it is not as loud as most systems that guys on here have.

I remember reading a post from Thunder a while back about exhaust mods and noise levels. From memory he basically said the stock systems were only just legal for noise, so any mod puts it over the allowed level.

 I think you have me confused with Mr Lautray there Nigel  he is the man who can make a car do previously unheard of things on the 1/4 mile. :bravo:
Once you get a good Tex clutch behind yours and some sticky tyres ... 12's should be a POP :yup:
Getting off track there, thanks to the original poster for starting this thread, gathering good info from this as I am on a similar quest.

What on earth for Dave ... your's isn't very loud ... :lmao: :stick:
As others have said, the only complaint you will have with a DF system is that it is perhaps a little too quiet ... however, 95% of the time that's a good thing. I have a full DF dual 2.5 on my VYSS and have never had an issue with the noise, I leave home at 3:45am every day and have NEVER woken up anyone at home or any neighbours.
Highly recommended system, I love it ...

Hi Nick....
Since when have you worried about noise????
I seem to remember your sig profile went something like "When I start my car I want people to think the world has ended.." (or similar)
Not getting older are we???

The DF sys seems to have more of a sophistocated burble ... loud when at WOT but driving around sanely its very nice ... definatly wont attract attention ... for those that want to be heard, this isnt the system for them, unless you modify it by removing centre mufflers etc ... but in stock form its a quiet system that still makes noise when you want it too... oh and i find its quite deep in terms of note ... not crackly etc (but mines auto so dont know about gearing down etc)

I've got a full difilippo system and I absolute love the note on idle and at flat stick but yeah take it a little easy when around the boys in blue so as to not attract any unecessary attention.
Go for it as its a quality item.

i have d/f 4 into 1 , 1" 7/8 pipes with twin 3" stainless d/f system on my wh grange with a pwr blower , i can only hear the exhaust note over the blower whine while under heavy acceleration if ive got all the windows down , it's got a real deep note at idle/ low rpm , not loud , just nice .
i would highly recommend there exhaust to any one playing with ls1,s as they fit properly, sound great and give no problems at all .
p.s i have as much ground clearance as i had with the std hsv exhaust

I have a DF 2x 2.5 cat back with pacie 4>1 1.75 and metal sub cats, sounds quiet at idle and cruise but at WOT starts to let you know it's a V8. Quiet on inside too very pretty much zero drone. This system is only a few months old and I have been told by a forum sponsor that DF changed their design not long ago chaging from hotdog style centre mufflers to a different centre design to conform to some new epa requirement in NSW. New systems are quieter than older type. Not sure if this is so only saying what I've been told.
