Hey guys,
I'm posting on the ford forums as well, my brother is looking at 2 xr6t's today, ones a mk I and the other a mk II.
Does anybody know the difference between the 2? I heard the mk II has stronger con rods, just want to give him some good feedback.
Cheers

Just spoke to a guy here at work who just sold his 2002 BA I XR6 Turbo 6spd auto.
Top car he said. Only drama was a diff whine from new. Ford replaced original diff with another diff. Same problem. Then Ford got a diff place in Perth to rebuild the diff. Since then no problems...
He suggested if your brother can get the BA II that had the little bugs ironed out, but no major changes from the BA I.
His had 60,000km on it and he sold it for $23k.
Hope this helps..
Cheers

Thanks fellas,
I'll let him know. Unfortunately he can't get the manual, but he'll be happy none the less.

Yeah thats right, they dropped the shitty T5 Manual for the ever reliable T56 ;)
Auto stayed the same though.

out of curiosity, I've driven the t56 in the fords and to me is miles ahead of the t56 in my ute and also a couple of VYs I have driven. whats the difference?

Yeah they do feel alot nicer than the box in our cars. I think they have double synchros on some gears and a lot nicer shifter feel and shorter throw from memory.
To the OP: Is your bro looking at BA or BF? Because there is a MK1&2 BA and a MK1&2 BF not that you can see much difference visually. If he can get a 6 speed Auto those boxes really are a work of art.

well Holden states that the T56 in the VE had triple synchros for 1st and 2nd (previous model double synchros) and 3rd to 6th got double (previous model single synchro) so the synchros in the VTII to VZII are the same as the falcons if you are correct...
although the T56 in the VE is so much better than previous models...i test drove one on saturday and the throw is shorter (due to gear set from M10) and i had a factory short shift on my old VXII R8...
back on topic tho.
if he can get the one with the 6speed auto then that would be the best,
especially if he wants to mod it later.
the 4spd box just wasnt up to the huge torque when bigger turbos, injectors, front mount intercooler, etc were done....
the 6spd were able to take the punishment with very small $$$ spent on modding the box.
thats what i was told anyway

if modding, the 6sp manual will handle anything thrown at it... there's quite a few 6 speeds handling over 400rwkw. Obviously a clutch is needed.
The 4sp auto will handle up to 250-300rwkw with just a trans cooler, but they'll be on borrowed time. For 2.5-4k a rebuild and strengthening will see them handle 400+rwkw.
5sp manual.. well, mine is still ok with 300rwkw.. touch wood. But i'm putting my pennies aside for the conversion or selling the car.
6sp auto... a real nice gearbox.. although, not really proven to handle big power "yet".. i'd give it another few months, a year perhaps... until some of the big boys start playing with them. Currently there's quite a few 350+rwkw 6sp auto phoons running without problems, but that was like the 4sp auto originally, then all of a sudden bang snap bang, they started failing. Give it time to see how they fare. I'd be waiting till some of drag racers use them and use them often.. then it'll prove for sure if they're gonna stand the test of time. so far, so good though. Gotta remember some of these modded F6's and Ts are producing massive torque. Might not kill it after 5000km, but give it time.
BA MKII had the 6sp manual gearbox and slightly better valve springs. other then that they are visually the same. BF MKI had typhoon valve springs and different front bar, plus 6sp auto. Later model BF MKI had phoon bottom end (stronger rods, valve springs etc). BF MKII same as MKI from what i know.
Hope this helps

Ba Mk 1 had the old 5 speed manual, Ba Mk 2 onwards has the T56. This box was modified by ford by giving it double syncros on all forward gears, one for the reverse. They also speced the box with linear bearings and direct linkage for the shifter.
If drag racing is your thing, find the auto and give it some stronger internals, but if your wanting to drive the thing, find the 6-speed manual, can't go wrong.
I was reading that F Auto Salvage has just put a 6 speed auto into an ealier model BA/BA2, this could be something else for you to look at.

a bloke on the xr6t forums has just done this conversion (6sp auto), but i haven't checked the thread for a while to know how it all went. As far as i know it went well though.

Yep, from what i read he put the running gear from a typhoon into a ba wagon, all the interior, engine, 6speed auto, xr front lights. The exercise was really the adaption of the 6speed auto, which has worked gr8 from what he has wrote. Now that he has done it, he's looking at selling the vehicle edited, with printouts, for $35K. Not a bad sleeper i'd say.....;)

nah mate, must be a different bloke. the guy i'm talking about has an XR6T, and has been modded to around 350rwkw. Previously had a 4sp auto that was strengthened and rebuilt. Now he's got the 6sp in it, and it's basically a BF.
but still, i've seen an XT BA with the XR6T motor in it... and geez, what a sleeper!!
