Why is it that its illegal to have catalytic converters removed from cars that were fitted with them, and yet we can have our old 'leaded' cars (pre 87) running on unleaded with no dramas or addition of cats? Dont get me wrong, I am not removing mine off the SS, but was wondering why I can fill my meteor up on unleaded and not be required to fit anything and everyone is happy.....?

Simple answer - the legislation wasn't retrospective, because it would have been *very* unpopular at the time if it was. Even now it'd probably be unpopular to force older cars to have cats fitted, so we live with the higher emissions instead.

This shouldn't be that hard to figure out.
Newer cars have an ADR requirement to have them fitted. No cat, no roadworthy.
Older cars, and no cat requirement? Usually driven by people doing it a little hard in life. The pollies cut them some slack. As said above, doesn't stir up the masses.
Besides, the pre 1986 models are getting much thinner on the ground these days, so less and less cars to worry about each year....

Just hollow out the CAT's and leave the skin in place - looks like they are there.... :)

CAT converters are one of the biggest contributors to global warming. Go to the forum performance centre - www.google.com - and do a search. Its a sad state of affairs :(

Don't forget also that it's only been the last few years where leaded petrol has been taken off the market. For most of the time since 1986, the older cars still ran on leaded petrol and so it didn't matter that they didn't have a cat. Leaded is gone now, but you don't see many pre-86 cars being driven around anymore either so it doesn't matter as much.

Cars will never be good for the environment. whether it's global warming, or lead in fuel, or nitrous oxides, or carbon monoxide. Yes, that even includes Toyota's warm, fuzzy feeling PriusII hybrid.
But, the removal of lead and the overall cleaner outputs of modern cars are arguably a "better overall" result.

well here is a good question. relates to fuel.
DIESEL. why is it that car makers are promoting diesel powered cars.
lead fuel was bad for us.
unleaded fuel is bad to. they just wont admit it.
lpg is full of aluminium deposits. not clean like they say.
and now diesel.
it is so carsenagenic. hope its spelt right.
diesel fumes are more toxic the being next to a smoker.
Austrlia has the dirtiest diesel in the world.
where is the logic.

The rapid increase in computerised common rail diesel engines with particulate filters in the exhaust is cleaning their act up.

Cars will never be good for the environment.
Until someone perfects the technology to be able to run an electric motor (large enough to drive a car) off solar energy...
