Hi guys

This week I took the opportunity to change my stock leads since they are now 120 k's old and thought they were due for a change. I replaced them with a set of Top Gun 8.8mm pro racing series leads and since then the idle seems to be a little more on the rough side compared to what it used to be with the stockies. Does anyone have any idea why the new leads would cause this?

Using the search I've found that a couple of our sponsors reccomend sticking to the stock OEM leads, especially the red ones found in the VY seires onwards. Maybe they can shed a bit of light to this subject.

Thanks in advance

double check that all the leads are fully pushed into the coil packs and plugs. if just one isnt making proper contact it will effect ur idle

it is possible to get a dud lead, rare but possible. take them back to the supplier and let them know the issue, shouldn't see them refusing a swap over.

my VS used to drop plug leads a fair bit, the OEM with the metal covers seem to be the way to go.

Those leads will NOT stay attached to the plug correctly particularly when you have the engine/leads hot after hard driving and misfire terribly. Mine ended up in the bin after day one of Classic Adelaide...replaced with brand new stockers....no more problems. You have been warned! :teach:

Old technology engine I know, but had Top Guns on my Mustang and they always produced a rough idle when the car was warm. Have changed over to Bosch leads and the difference is amazing.

All you guys might want to check out the thread on the msd coil packs. Street tuna talks about the differences between the standard and aftermarket coils and leads. Basicly he states that there is no point changing from the factory ones because they seem to be the best out there.

Thanks for the feedback guys, looks like i'll be ordering a set of stockies tomorrow. Tuna seems to be right on the money, the warmer the engine gets, the rougher the idle becomes, especially on Sunday when the temp was was in the mid 30's.

What's a set of stock red VY leads worth?

What's a set of stock red VY leads worth?
My VYII SS is playing up atm so I priced up some sets from Coventry's:

Genuine $198/set incl. GST
NGK $90/set incl. GST

Do these prices sound about right?

Can anybody offer any feedback on the NGK leads?

The only time i had problems with plug leads is when i had the oem ones.
Twice they came loose off the plugs, never had any problems with the magnacores i had on for 50000k's.

I have found that a fair few TopGun leads have had the core off centre in the silicone after cutting the lead open(cross sectional view).

NGK and Bosch leads seam to be centralised and the NGK ones are hard to fault for the money.
