Mate I have had my 02 for 2 and a bit years and love it to bits (not in a dirty way) I have done absolutely nothing to it in the way of mechanical failures and enjoy driving it every day.To me the VYss is still one of the best looking (inside and out) You will not be disappointed.
Just look for one that has been well maintained some like myself don't mind buying heavily modded cars so all the work is done or when I bought mine it was dead stock and probably had an easy life. There are no real inherent problems to look for as most motor issues were sorted by the VY so just treat it like any car purchase and just try and find a good tight well looked after wife err car.

The 6-speed manual shift is pretty average at best. Probably not specific to just the VY model though.

I got a vyss 2004 model. No major problems. My power steering was a bit noisy and holden replaced it for me no worries. Try and get a low klm one and it always pays to get a full inspection done.
Good luck with yoour purchase.

Check the read tires for excess wear on the inside if you think its excessive get the read alinment check there can a a tire wear issue is some VY's but they have improved heaps from the earlier models.

VT is still the best looking car hands down, smooth and sleek,,.
Vy is so yesterday for 2 reasons, "they tried with the VX(did the job for future P platers),then they built the VY and nailed it, BUT then they did the VZ and left u wondering why u bought a vy, no competition!!!

if i didnt buy my barge i woulda bought a Vy SS. They are a really nice car and worth the G's over the VX.

VT's never did grow on me enough to buy one, don't get me wrong the shape is ok but I love the VY shape! i can't see a huge amount of dif between the VY & VZ. If a VZ SS came up for the right price I guess I'd consider it also but VY SS's are become really cheap at the moment.

Hey mate, I bought my VY SS ute new in 04 and haven't had any major problems. One thing that I have found is that the front swaybar links don't seem to last to long and get a little clunky. Also if you find an M6, check how easy it is to go from reverse to 1st and neutral to reverse. Holden used a sub-standard spigot bearing and in some cases (mine) it is near impossible to engage 1st or Reverse at idle. LINK (http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=60223):teach:

mate, just listen for piston slap. start it up cold if you can. by the vz they finally sorted it out. and the fuel guages are renowned for being dodgy, had mine recalibrated by holden tech, wont cost ya anything, but normally fixes the problem up.
other than that they are great.
good luck

Ok guys time is slowly nearing, after talking to a few ppl they mentioned the suspension & exhausts were different from SI to SII- can anyone confirm this?

From memory, the cats were positioned differently on the V2, closer to the engine rather than under the floor pan.

Besides the usual LS1 slap issues,
Swaybar link, pwr steering pump, diff clunk, doors fall out of alignment, all relatively easily fixed, in fact, I would doubt they are a VYSS Ls1 if they didnt have at least one of these issues!

Sway bar & pwr steering pump don't worry me but diff clunk!?!
Doors falling out of alignment shits me had the same problem with my VS clubby, is this easily fixed?

Diff clunk is the easiest fixed by way of additive. Do a search. Doors out of alignment are even easier. Only happended to me twice in 4 years. Never the same door.
