Are you talking about the fact that quite a few earlier LS1s had problems with excessive oil consumption and/or were very noisy? That would more be a recall, not a recal which I assume to be short for recalibration i.e. edit = tune = recalibration (of computer).

Problem engines were never the subject of a recall in the true sense of the word like a normal recall. Individual people just complained about oil consumption and/or noisy engines, were typically told it was normal, complained again and eventually had the motor rebuilt (or swapped for one that had been rebuilt).

Not all motors had problems so the likelihood is that the one you are looking at either a) never had a rebuild so is most likely OK or b) had a rebuild so may be OK (I know of people who had their motor rebuilt more than once).

Basically if your mate works in a dealership take it in before buying it and get them to check it. Service people at dealers should by now know exactly what to look and listen for (although it's pretty obvious if you have a noisy one!). They can also use the VIN to check whether it had a rebuild under warranty.

Do a search on noisy engines or oil consumption problems or rebuilds and you'll no doubt find enough reading to keep you off the streets for a while.......... :search:

If he worked at a Holden dealer he should be well aware that there was NEVER a recall, only rebuilds or replacements as required in a fairly small percentage of cases. Yes, that was a fair few engines, but as a percentage of V8 models sold, only a few percent, so nowhere near bad enough for a recall.

Ahhh, that is rather a totally different question to the topic of this thread. You really should be starting a different thread, not sending your initial one in multiple directions.

That last shot sure looks wierd. Is that actually the same car??

I reckon that's a series 2. Only because of the 255kw instead of the 250kw

I think the Series 2's may have a bit of woodgrain in the steering wheel too.

P.S. Calling a Grange a Statesman is like calling a Clubsport a Commodore. Its just not cricket. I'm hurt hahaha

Try red book and compare the models. That way you can see the difference in features etc etc

If it's 1999, then it should only have a 250 badge on the back, as there were no 255kw badged engines out until after that. The LS1 was only available full stop for a short time in 1999, and that was released with the VT Series 2, but i'm not sure what series the Statesman was released with, and if the Grange was even released at the same time as the statesman.

What do you mean by VIN search? If you mean you can get your mate to do it at the Holden dealer then yes, it will tell you what options it was built with (but obviously not what's been done since). For quite a few years LSD diffs have actually had a metal tag on them saying LSD. Probably applied back then too.
