Hey Guys,
Just wondering for all those out there with VT SS if they had any problems with there water pump yesterday i started here a continuos rubbing/clunking noise coming from what seems to be the fan belt area. I took it to Holden and they have told me that it seems to be the water pump:cussing:, knowing this i spoke to someone else thats in the trade and they said they have never heard of a water pump failing and making a bearing noise because the pumps failed.
Just wondering if anyone has had this problem, whether it was the water pump or fan belt bearings and how much it cost them to fix it :bawl: ?

Typically id prefer it to be the bearings due to cost but knowing my luck it'll probably be the water pump :banghead:

Any Help Would be appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

Yep, replaced mine last year at 98000Km. I didn't have any noise related to it, but I was loosing coolant at a rate of about half a litre per week or there abouts.

"seems" to be the water pump ? I'd be asking for a real answer. You can check the bearings in the pump by giving the pulley a wobble, it shouldn't move. Better yet take the belt off and give the pump a spin, it should be quiet and smooth. Any roughness or noise is going to be much worse under tension. While the belt is off you can check the idles and the alternator to see if they are responsible.

You should be able to fire up the engine without the belt to see if the noise is still there. Don't run it for long though, as you have no coolant circulating. Just long enough to see if there is noise.

Actually, if you want to drop round I'll have a quick look at it.

When my dads VT SS water pump failed it started to make whirring (high pitched) noises and it started loosing a lot of coolant.

Replaced my waterpump at 95,000kms because of a noisy bearing. Bought a brand new one for under $200 from ebay.

You serious!!! Or are they???
The seal leaks, causing the bearing to fail from the coolant reaching it. About the oldest failure in the book....
Gen3 pumps failing is well known in the trade.

Yep, you're right there planetdavo. Chris dropped round this arvo and we had a quick look. Even before releasing the tension on the belt the pulley had movement. Once the tension was released the pump pulley had around 1/8" movement on it. Needless to say Warthog is now pricing a replacement pump before the big "shoot 'n cruise" this Saturday.
