Howdy all.

I just stumbled across these little beauties.
5 axis milling machines doin their thing.

They make a V8 block from a solid block of ali...

Take a peek

That's great! Wonder if the missus will let me have one for the shed?

Must be an incredible bit of programming to do all that too.

I wonder HM hours that job took?

AWESOME!!!

You could have forged internals, and externals

I don't mean to be pedantic, but forging is actually the shaping of metal by pressing rather than by machining metal away.;)

I think you'll find Seedy was referring to machining an already forged billet.

Thankyou C4B. ;)

I was almost forced to unvail my 'derrrrrrr' picture

We're too late.... Forged/CNC Cut Aluminium Blocks:

I could sit and watch stuff like that all day!

Which cars do those blocks go into? I've never seen it with my own eyes, but surely it'd be much quicker & easier casting a block?

One more dumb question: What parts were those last two machines making?

I love the way they cut threads. The 'hex milling' was very interesting to see!

race ready CN Block is typically 20 to 30 pounds lighter than a race ready cast aluminum block.
Thats interesting.
I once watched a 2.5m cube of steel get heated with gas burners till white hot, then a large (almost crane like) machine driven by an operator grabbed it and kept squashing it into the ground. He rolled it and rolled it, until it formed a fat disc of metal. about 80cm diametre and 60cm high.

Very impressive to watch, and was a great example of how much the metal is compacted in forged steel.

I can't see how the forged aluminium blacks would be lighter, unless its due to the higher tensile strength, meaning they can use less metal to make the surrounding block.

but surely it'd be much quicker & easier casting a block?

My old man does both milling and casting.
Cast is a good back for buck. Can knock them out relatively quicker than you could with machining. Then there's also the maintenance on machinery, and the dead on balls accuracy required with the programming.

The programming alone would take weeks. The usual CNC operator is not a computer/rocket technician.

Clixan: I don't think they were making anything specific. Just showing off the versatility of the machines.

I've just got plain black ones out my way  :lmao:

I had a chance to get a job at HarropEng, to learn a 5 axis CNC. Why I didnt go, loyalty to the old boss :banghead:
I had a good tour of the place, and was amazed at the machinery they have.
Ages ago I've seen a similar video, where they turn a magwheels out of block of aluminium on an old CNC, which is one of the reasons I got into CNC machining. So far I have designed small GEN3 V8 badge encased in a chev symbol, it doesnt look too bad.

That stuff just blows me away... I often do maintenance at the holden plant in port melbourne and sometimes stop and watch the cnc machines cleaning up the castings, I can watch that stuff for ages.

That was impressive, I could watch these all day. Reminded me of one I downloaded off the ferrari site and I've found it on youtube.

Hey, great find.. I was really hoping to see it fire up. Shame that the clip
stopped just at the interesting part... fruits of their labour and all that.

Thanks it was excellent.

cheers

its these machines that prompted me to learn to become a CNC Technician, programming and operating is fun but teaching and fixing them is even more fun:)

Great post!
Machinist by trade, trained up and was CNC machining for couple of years, reckon I would have stuck with it if I was making engine bits like that block!
It looks like fun but all the work is in setting and programming, when the machine is going you are usually programming the next job.
