View Full Version : VE SSV or 2005 GTO Monaro???

Hey All
Quick question. If you had $55K to spend and you had to choose between a brand spanking VE SSV or a 2005 GTO Monaro, which would you choose.
Monaro details are as follows:
2005 HSV GTO LS2 6 Litre V8 (297kW ECE which is 305kW DIN), 6 speed manual. Turismo mica in colour (rarest colour in the Z series GTO range) with black leather interior.
All standard GTO options plus AP 6 Piston Braking System (362 x 32mm 6 piston front, 343 x 26mm 4 piston rear brakes). The AP braking system was a $6,500 option when GTO was last sold new.
Car is UNMARKED (not single scratch!) and in IMMACULATE CONDITION with a mere 8,600 km’s on the clock. Even the rims are immaculate, unmarked and without any gutter rash (try finding that on any other car). Has never been driven in the rain, and is always garaged. Tyres are the original Pirellis from the HSV factory and are in immaculate condition. Just that in it’s self should tell you that this car has not been abused! You won’t find a better Z series GTO in Australia for the money.
The vehicle also comes with extended 6 year / 175,000 Km warranty, free Holden Dealership servicing till June 2008, and registration until the end of June 2007.
Any help/advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd take the Monaro, but then again I haven't driven a VE SSV yet either. Having said that...I really dislike that colour :spew:
I think I saw this car last week near Maroubra. The guy driving it was a car wholesaler. Does it have an SVM sticker on the rear window?

It will be your decision in the end and there are pro and cons for each.
If the GTO is going to be your only car remember that 2 doors can be a pain at times.

If the 2 doors aren't an issue, I would definetly go the Monaro. The VE will be just another SS worth half it's value in a couple of years.

Dont know to be honest. Saw the advert on carsales.com. Havent called the guy yet, but thats because im still deciding over what to get.
Thats why I was wanting an opinion on which car is a better package overall.

Go the GTO, the VE SS its just going to be like any other SS in 2 years time and the GTO will still be that GTO, go the GTO.

Oh ok. Apologies for the confusion. I just copied and pasted the advert from carsales.com.
Still waiting for a few more opinions. I was hoping for a pros and cons list for both cars so I have something objective to compare the cars with.
Looks like I will have to do some further research before I make a decision.

GTO (not Monaro:teach: )
Also biased though, like others have said SS will be JUST an SS, but I s'pose a GTO could be classed as just a GTO (if it wasnt as damn good as it is:driving: )
PS,
Of you havent looked harder and this is the 1st GTO you have seen............. search around a bit - will probably get one tad cheaper - just as good of nick - who knows till you try

Wish I had a dilemma like this one when I was 23!!
Personally, I don't like the look of the VE SS. They look as plain as from the front. And the rear spoiler does exactly what it's name says it does. It spoils the best looking part of the car.
Given a choice between these two, I'd go the GTO, but try to bargain them down a bit.

You can get brand new GTO (monaro for the stirrers :lmao:) for not much more than the 55k you are looking at spending.
Go the GTO (that started life from a Monaro) it is a much tougher looking car & will hold its money for much longer. If I didnt have a daughter that was still using a car seat, well I would be selling 1 of my cars & go buy 1.
Cheers

go and drive the two and then decide.
alot of ppl are biased one way or the other.
i too was looking at similar but a new Z one that dealers are still selling here new for $62K plus OR..i think from what i remember...
i drove a mates GTO then took a SSV from a dealer for a spin.
my personal opinion is the SSV was a better handling and felt like it had more power...well i know it doesnt on the specs but it felt like it put the power down nicer anyway....
ppl seem to knock the VE models alot but take one for a spin...a calais or SSV or HSV...not an omega...and you will be surprised what a complete package it really is..
the GTO is 2 doors and even though you think its not an issue...it does become an issue...
the GTO is an older model
in your case the GTO is second hand and the SSV is new
the VE is a shape that some ppl love and some hate...just personal preference
although some say i am biased i actually took both cars for a drive and the SSV for me clearly won out...might no be everyones choice but it was mine

haha! Well actually, (do not mean to sound arrogant) if I really wanted, I could comfortably afford the new GTS, but Im also looking into buying a new investment property.
Just for the record, my parents arent wealthy and I wasnt born with a silver spoon in my mouth, its actually the opposite. I just worked very hard to get where I am today and be working in the position I am.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to decrease the amount of tax that I am paying that goes into Johnny's pocket :cussing: and I will be all sweet.
Thanks for the info, I think I am leaning towards the GTO now.

Thanks for the advice dude. Definitely sounds like a good idea. I will probably take the SSV and GTO for a test spin and see which one comes out on top. That is as objective as it gets. But the other guys are right in saying that the SS will be just another SS in a couple of years time.
Also, I fear that if I take the SSV for a test drive, I will be tempted to take the GTS for a spin too and who who knows where that will lead. :p

We've got a VZ GTO, so some will say I'm biased!
However, I saw the ad for the GTO you speak of. (a) Turismo is a very rare colour-the rarest of all colours for GTO. (b) car has the AP 6 spot brake package factory fitted--factory option cost is $6.5k, but much more if you bought them aftermarket. (c) car is very low k, & supposedly "as new".
Retail cost for that car originally would have been $90k+!!--I know that's not the case now, but the price asked still represents very good value IMHO!
And yes, we're super happy with our GTO.
If you can live with 2 doors, then ther's no choice to be made--GO THE GTO--but drive it & see what you reckon. And I'll readily admit, that we only bought the 6 spot brakes "because we could!"--they look a whole lot better than the standard brakes behind those 19" wheels that's for sure!-It's quite a rare option on GTO--so an added bonus with this car.
Cheers, Pickles.

I've seen the ad in carsales for the GTO and at $55k with AP brakes and 8500kms its not a bad buy at all mate. Yes the SSV is a top car and they have greatly improved the GM product with it but trying not to sound too biased the GTO is a little more 'special'. ;)
You're going to get a HSV with a rare colour, upgraded brakes, nice 6.0 lump(like the VE),2 doors(I've got a thing for coupes:p ) and a very visually appealing car all round. Plus, I feel the GTO will hold its value better than the SSV if that is a major precondition to your decision on which of the two to buy.
The GTO's not perfect mate and I would concede the VE's a more technologically advanced car (it cost a billion dollars) but for me the GTO would be my choice (is my choice:confused:) hands down.
Go the GTO buddy:thumbsup:

Just to clarify, the ad on carsales for the GTO is actually $60K but Im sure I can get him down to $55K. Its listed as $60K firm, but its been on there for a while and nothing yet, so Im guessing that he will be dropping the price in the near future.
If anyone has seen other '05 GTOs going for a reasonable price, can you please paste the link so I can have a quick geeze.
GN3GTO, can you please confirm that this is the one you saw, because this is the one I have my eye on at the moment.

I love my ssv and there is a GTO up the road that is nice, i would be happy to have both!!!!!
Couple of members have said about the SSV losing value pretty quick. It will for sure but how is that any different to the $90000 plus car available for $55000 a year later?
All cars are money pits that is why you have to buy one that you really like and enjoy the hell out of it.
Go the SSV in my opinion.:driving:

Out of the two the GTO would be the pick - though I would suggest the VE would be a better handling and riding car - braking wise the GTO would be great.
Though if I was spending $55K at the moment I would get a E36 M3 3.2L as my performance car - I just wouldn't risk spending big bucks on a 6.0L car at the moment the way petrol pricing is so volitile at the moment.

I had a GTO for a day whilst the SS was getting some things checked out. It was a yellow one with 500kms on the clock. It was an auto as well..
Very nice car and they are very well optioned up, great brakes, good resale value etc.. But at the end of the day after getting back into the SS, I really
liked my car to drive over the GTO.. as a daily driver anyway. Whilst you would get a nicer resale value, remember that there is a big hike in insurance
costs over the SS each year. Jumping back into the VE also felt more upto date and comfortable. Bang for my buck kinda feeling I spose. Either way I reckon you would not be dissapointed with either choice... Happy Hunting :driving:

Electric memory seats (and IMO they are fantastic)
And the best one is illuminated vanity mirrors :)

And of course they look better :p

VE calais V with v8 :deal:
GTO.
Has a better badge.
Has a nicer look
More power
It has an edge on 'class'
...think chicks ;)
Though as said a million times. It doesn't feel as nice to drive as the new VE's.
Handling and age is the only thing in favour in this comparison.
Depending on your lifestyle a 2 door car shouldn't bother you too much.

Go out & drive both cars & make a decision on what you what!
It's your money, not anyone else's. But fair enough, opinions are good from others.
I haven't driven either & it's something that i'm not going to make a priority on doing.
If you like the what the monaro has to offer, then go for this. Then you have the VE with all it's new bullshit onboard...

Haha! Mate, Im FAR from loaded. I consider myself pretty much middle of the road. I make a decent earning, but not nearly enough to afford the new Z06.
Needless to say, if I had that much money to spend on a car I would be getting the new M3 (dream car) and still have enough change left to buy a second hand SS as a daily driver.
Also Im buying an investment property in a couple of months so I have to factor that in to the finances too. But if the win the lottery!
Are you for real - it's got to be the SSV - do you know how small the boot is in the GTO's ?;)
PS - as rare as it may be - that spewy blue doesn't do much for me...

The choice will ultimately come down to whether you need 2 or 4 doors, as many have stated.
If you can get away with 2 doors, buy the GTO. If you NEED 4 doors, for whatever reason, then the SS would be more practical.
Good luck with the choice, you will be very happy with a HSV GTO if that is how you end up going.

ding dong, colin watson in traralgon has a black gto auto, been sitting there since november, so you might get a good deal so they can get rid of it, if it was a manual I would have bought it back then, its a tuff looking thing, but really if you are going to spend about $60 big ones you might as well buy a VE R8, cause if you drive the gts you are talking about, it will probably win you over. ps make sure you let us all know which way you go

I wouldnt be interested in getting an auto car as I have been driving manual all my life. Auto just doesnt appeal to me. Even if it was the $50K mark I would be reluctant to buy it as its an auto.
I called some HSV dealers in Sydney and they have all advised that its going to cost around $70K o/r for a brand spankin VE R8. I know its an awesome piece of machinary but I really have to hold out on the temptation for now.
Im meeting with a friend of mine this saturday - he is a CA - to sort out my finances (Im wanting to buy an investment property too). Once I have some clear cut figures I will let you guys know which way im going to be heading.
Thanks for all the advice everyone. Gotta love this site and all its members!
