View Full Version : VE speedo accuracy

I've had the VE R8 for about 2 days now and finding the digital speedo immensely useful. But I'm finding that even when I sit around 3-4km/h over the posted limit (remember this is SA, limits aren't enforced Nazi-style yet) I am being constantly tailgated by all sorts of cars - even old people in Corollas.
So I'm starting to wonder if the speedo is out. I heard years ago that HSVs had calibrated speedos, as per the ones fitted to police-spec Commodes.

Mine reads 3KM/h under at 110KM/h (ie doing 107 while indicating 110). Seems to be about the same (maybe 2.5KM/h) at 100Km/h.

Nah, calibrated speedo is an old fashioned and nowadays inaccurate term that many use when they actually mean certified speedo, and no Police cars don't come with them, rather the speedo fitted to Poluce cars is subsequently certified (tested and shown to be accurate) therefore allowing it to perform 'check speeds' and 'radar speed checks' as opposed to 'estimate speeds'. FYI any punter can have his speedo certified/calibrated if they wish.
As to the accuracy of VE speedo, sorry not a clue but in a few weeks I might have a better idea. In any case, if VE speedo is at all similar to VY/VZ in performance, then my experience is they will be spot on when compared to compared against the displayed patrol radar speeds. Having said this, the one's I have seen have been certified and so I'm not too sure how they come out of the factory in terms of accuracy.

Take it to someone like Tuna who can check the speedo accuracy on the dyno, and can also adjust it if necessary if it is out.

I wouldn't be too concerned about your speedo, unless you have changed your diff ratio or tyre size etc. A recent trip down to the coast had me being passed my almost every sh!tbox on the road as well! I had cruise set 3km/h over the limit, which is about the amount any Commodore from VY on are out by at 110km/h.

My VE is 3kph under at any given speed (but I hvaen't tested it below 50kph)

Not VE but both my VZ SSs were virtually dead accurate according to various speed checks I went through (maybe 1kmh out at 100kmh).

I'm finding the same thing in my VE - if I sit dead on the speed limit I get passed by pretty well everyone. I'm putting it down to the simple fact that everyone does 5-10 over.

 Just realised why mine were so accurate ...... Had both had diff changes and the guys at G&D had got it spot on as part of tune and diff change.

As far as I'm aware, the digital speedo is acurate, but the anologue speedo is calibrated slightly high. If you sit on 100, on the digital speedo, the anologue reads about 101/102.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I don't find the analogue speedo easy to read (I think the VY/VZ speedo was clearer). It just looks too cramped.
Tend to rely fully on the digital one which works fine.
