Is it true that a flip key for a VE is worth $2500? I haven't checked with a dealer, but I'm told this is the going rate.
Even the Audi keys were "only" about $600.

$2500? that has to be an error
I sure as hell (and I am not alone here) wouldn't want to pay $2500 for a friggen key even if it is a fancy flip key.

not sure but I doubt it would be that much - my guess is between $400-$600
(but then I have no idea)

my mate just bought an SV6 (optioned it up to 50k), and i think he said he told the salesperson he wouldnt buy it unless they gave the flip key to him for free, because sposedly its worth about that much! ouch! But yeh, after looking at the key, dont think its worth that much. I'l try ask my mate tonite and get a definite answer for u guys, unless someone beats me to it.

I think the flip key upgrade isn't all that expensive as a factory option.

I have the flip key. I cant remember correctly but the key itself is around the 120 mark but wait....then you need to get it programmed which was another 200 or so.
No way worth $2500, I'd prefer to up the wheels instead

I think back in another thread there was talk of converting a pre VE vehicle key to a flip key and I beleive from memory seldo went and bought one to experiment, I couldnt see him paying that money to butcher it?
I just went on the holden website and it is only $75 to upgrade to a flip key.
so I think not.:deal:

I don't know what advances in flip key technology are but way back in 1997 my old boy had an E series merc with a flip key, the mechanism lasted for a bit over a year and it was time for a new one, mercedes replaced for no cost.
IMO the dealer should come to the party and throw one in for nothing you are, FFS you're spending a few thousand on a new car its not like you are buying a second hand '84 corolla

The $75 is for the flip part of the key only. The original key splits apart and the flip part is added. The new blank has to be cut (added cost) and the key programmed (added cost) The transponder is in the original part of the key and the immobilizer is in the flip part of the key. The dealer has to de-program and re-program the key, which I'm told is a bit of a pain in the ass. Total price will rise accordingly.

Just a timely reminder that in a previous thread it has been reported that some of us are seeing the buttons on the flip key "indenting"
At one point there was 'rumour' that Holden where aware of the problem and supposedly a fix/solution was forthcoming. On that basis I registered my fault with the dealer - just to have it on record that after less than 3000klms (at the time) - my key is showing signs of the problem.
I'm not sure if the dealer ever made a file note and not sure that Holden really have ever acknowledged that there is a looming problem. The key still works but the indent on the button skin does not indicate the key would last many years without a crack in the skin.
If mine gets any worse or fails in the next 3 years - I'm going to fight like hell to get it replaced under warranty and not have the excuse that it is normal wear and tear - particularly if the replacement cost is any where between $400 and $2500 (which seem a tad high).
Others may wish to register the problem with the dealer in case a battle ensues later on. My theory being that if you flag it within the first few months of ownership - in a year or so's time you may have a better case when you need to argue with the service dept.
Of course - I could be wrong and maybe GMH will do the right thing - oops ther goes another flying pig

The buttons on the flip key are the same as the standard key. The only part of the key that's different is the part that flips. Have a close look at your keys and you'll see they are in two sections.
And, yes the key buttons tend to wear quite quickly, hope that gets sorted out.

Some dreamer has spread a wild rumour that a few too many people obviously jumped in and believed!
It's approx $75 for the head part, the same again for the flip key part, about $30 to cut the shaft, and about $50 for programming. Upgrading a standard key to a flip simply requires swapping the two shaft sections over, using the same key head.
As for the worn buttons, the supplier has changed the material the buttons are made from so that they last longer.

Thanks for that info Planetdavo :)
Out of my 2 keys I got with the car I have already dropped the spare one and broken it :D and my one all the buttons have gone indented like mentioned already so if that breaks I am screwed haha.

So... after that, what is the actual value of a replacement key? I'd like to know just in case :D..
Anyone got a pic of the flipper ?
So if you have an SSV do you have to get a flip for replacements or can you just get a standard non flip ?

Um, get a calculator and add up the prices I said above...

VE use a two piece key. The only difference between the two types is the lower part, the electronic part is the same with either type. You can replace it with the slightly cheaper non flip, but it will only save you maybe $30 dollars.

I assume that you are refering to me as the wild dreamer. I can understand from my post that it could be construed that way but what I was tring to state was $75 is alot different to $2000+ ie I find it highly unlikly that a replacemnt key would cost $2500 once again you have shown your ignorance:flipoff:

You should be able to go to your dealer witrh your damaged or broken key, they will take the shaft out, put it in a new housing and re program it, cost me a $100 to get done through my dealer,
All the prices on here seem extreme just to replace a key. Mayb my dealer is good to there customers, and not trying to rip them off.

Get over yourself! I had no idea who ever bought up the $2500 key ORIGINALLY, and it was kingclifton that mentioned hearing a price of up to $2500. I wasn't saying he believed it either, just that he mentioned hearing it, and if a few people mention hearing a price of something, there will always be someone that at least half believes it. How that has become "aimed" at you is a seriously ridiculous claim!
But, since you have somehow taken it to mean the post was aimed at you specifically, I suggest you take a panadol or two and have a bit of a lie down, rather than flipping off like an idiot.
Damn there are some touchy people on this forum....
